Vermont healthiest, Miss. worst, again

Vermont, for the sixth consecutive year, ranks as the healthiest U.S. state, while Mississippi and Louisiana tied for last place, a non-profit group said.

The United Health Foundation, established by health insurer UnitedHealth Group, used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources involving 24 measures of health, including tobacco use, alcohol abuse, exercise, immunizations, premature birth rates, cancer and heart disease rates.

Dr. Reed V. Tuckson, medical adviser at the United Health Foundation said as a nation, the United States made extraordinary gains in longevity over the past decades, but as individuals, health is regressing -- Americans are living longer but are sicker.

The report also found:

-- Obesity increased 137 percent from 11.6 percent of the adult population from the 1990 report to 27.5 percent in 2011. More than 25 percent of Americans are obese -- more than 30 pounds overweight.

-- In the past year, U.S. smoking decreased from 17.9 percent to 17.3 percent in adults, the lowest in 22 years from a high of 29.5 percent in 1990.

-- Children living in poverty are challenged by lack of access to healthcare, limited availability of healthy foods, constrained physical activity, limited access to educational opportunities and stressful living conditions. Child poverty went from 17.4 percent of children reported in 2007 to 21.5 percent of children last year.

-- Diabetes diagnosis was significantly higher than it was five years ago.

The statistics show that states can improve their ranking. Vermont was ranked 20th in 1990, but steadily made improvements over the years to get where it is now.

Maine is #9 and has the lowest crime rate in the US still. Moved here from #21, VA. I definitely feel less stressed, but lower population density does that to me. My blood still boils every time I have to drive near/into Boston

A lot of people move to south claiming they want to get away from the winters in the northeast.
Yet apparently as soon as they get there they just sit inside their air conditioned homes.

I'm getting fat, which is kind of a bummer, but I just joined a gym that I can safely ignore until I'm legitimately obese, so there's that. I'm stressed about money, but it's the holidays, so that's to be expected. Apart from that, things are kicking ass.

My state, Oklahoma is #43, but I feel great. Wife, job, family and house are all beyond awesome, more than I could have ever hoped for.

Quit smoking cigarettes 3.5 years ago after 30 years of the habit. Lift weights or some type of exercise for an hour minimum 4-5 times a week. In my late 40s and about 20 pounds overweight, but not really going to fret about it. I eat healthy most of the week, but do like my beer on the weekends.

Work and hobbies keep my body and brain busy, hardly a day goes by I don't learn something new.

Life is good.

'sup, Kevin? Hang in there, beer thirty isn't that far away.

I have exams 8-10:30 AM Tuesday/Thursday and 7-9:30 PM the same days and live an hour from campus. I need to find a place to nap lol. I will definitely be partaking in large quantities of beer come Thursday night.

IL is #30.

Wisconsin is better than us.
And then Minnesota is better then them.

I want to move north, but don't want to look for a new job, also, I'm about 60K upside down on my house....

Michigan, #37. Dropped from #33 in 2011.

I definitely cannot speak for the overall job market here, but back in the spring of this year I was searching for jobs in downstate MI (I'm from the U.P.), specifically Software Development jobs. There were more openings than I felt like sending a resume to, and got a great job in Ann Arbor within a month. In fact, yesterday I got an email from a recruiter (I've gotten them every so often since being hired in May) saying he's got great opportunities for contract and permanent positions. No shortage of Developer jobs here, that's for sure.

I'm fairly happy living here, though I do miss the U.P. I'd move back in a heartbeat if there were decent Software Developer careers up there.

Interesting that CO was randed 1st in other surveys in the past couple of years and is now 13th.

Each survey must use different data and/or interpretation of such.

Colorado is going to plummet like a Boulder when the collective effect of laziness and munchies hits.
