Fetch FTP

I am one of those people who annoys the hell out of tech people. I am woefully ignorant about computers and have a gross inability to absorb or express technical info and it's not pretty when I have a computer problem b/c all I can do is scream and throw things.

I have a Mac. OSX.2.
I got a copy of FETCH 4.0.2 and it was working fine, but suddenly I can't make a connection to my FTP directory.

This happened once before and I just ran the disk utility and that seemed to solve the problem.

I'm in a time crunch so I just downloaded a copy of Captain FTP and it's seems to be doing the same thing, just idling and not connecting.

Could this be a problem with my computer or the software? I would greatly appreciate any help.

check your usernames and passwords... remember they are case sensitive... check the web site that you want to tranfer files to or from: maybe their servers down?... if you can log in to the internet it should work.

Okay, it was working one day, next day not so much...

Either something on your system or local network had changed or something on the remote system has changed.

So lets first rule out your computer... did you install any new programs? Did you remove any programs? Or delete any miscellaneous files? How about changing configuration parameters (IP address, DNS, etc.)?

Next step is the network... is your router/hub plug in and powered on? Can you ?ping? the ftp site you?re trying to access?

Finally talk to the operator of the remote system... did they install new passwords? Did they change their IP address?

There are a lot more steps and processes that you can go through trying to solve this, but 95% of ?it worked yesterday? problems can be solved herein.
