Fetchin' Internet Criminals!!

Decided to browse my bank account this afternoon and to my horror see approximately $1000 missing.

I find 9 charges through Paypal to "Codepeople" for various amounts and a single $675 charge to "Webassist".

I call Webassist and get an answering machine.

I call Paypal and apparently a supposed 1-time use account had been setup in my wife's name with her debit card. Paypal is on top of things and should have things cleared up in 10 days.

I have to go into the bank this afternoon and get disputes started to get my money back and re-activate or re-issue my debit card.

My wife feels horrible. She is always very careful with her on-line purchases. Something, somewhere got a hold of her account and now we have to pick up the pieces.

That is why we try not to use a Debit Card for Internet Purchases. At least with a credit card you are really not out any money. With a Debit Card you are out the money until the issue is resolved. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

This is why I never, ever use my debit card online. If your credit card gets compromised, you don't temporarily lose control of money you need to pay bills with. I've had my credit card number stolen three times online in the last ten years (last time was this summer), so I know that it happens with enough regularity to not trust that my checking account will be safe.

Yeah, we'll have to start revising our usage. All the money should be recoverable/refundable by the bank. We'll just be out the inconvenience.

This is the only problem we have ever had in the 5+ years we've been buying stuff online.

Is there a reason you think the card was compromised online? How do you know it wasn't at a restaurant/gas station/whatever?
