Where are the print heads located? I heard that they are right in the print cartridges themselves on a Lexmark printer. So, where are they located on the major printers such as HP, Lexmark, and Epson?

Also, I noticed that the black print cartridge on an Epson printer was smaler then the HP and Lexmark. Does that mean it holds less ink and produces less? Your thoughts?

Thanks for reading.

Oh we know...we know.

But the question is vague. HP and Lexmark tend to have print heads on the ink cartridge which means everytime you replace the ink you replace the printhead. However, some of the HP business printers have ink cartridges without printheads.

Epson printers tend to have ink cartridges without printheads and do not forget Canon printers which are some of the cheapest per page inkjet printers. On these printers the printhead is located beneath where you insert the ink cartridges.

The printhead just looks like a piece of metal with tiny holes in it. It isn't very thick.

Canon and Epson printers tend to have ink tanks while HP and Lexmark have cartridges with integrated print heads. Generally all you can see of the printhead is the outside and it is oriented toward the paper surface to be printed. The appearance varies, but with a high-power loupe you might be able to find the tiny holes thru which the ink is delivered.
. My new Canon Pixma iP3000 is great! Canons are by far the cheapest to operate over the long term. Both the ink tanks are cheap (even if you buy OEM) - remarkably cheap if you buy compatible tanks. Their print heads are user-replaceable and not extremely expensive while Epson's heads require a trip to an authorized repair facility.

Epson designs their heads to last "the life of the printer." Pretty ambigious, but their printheads are covered under manufacturer's warranty in case of failure. Canon's printheads are considered consumables and are not covered under warranty. So while you might not have warranty coveage on the heads, they're generally user-replaceable (but not in all cases). And sometimes, the replacement printheads cost almost as much as the entire printer...
