few questions about window managers and sharing btw linux and windows

I read somewhere that KDE and Gnome are desktops, and icewm, enlightenment and such are window managers. What are the difference? or are they the same thing?

Also, is there a comparison of different window managers? I heard from a friend that KDE and Gnome takes up a lot of resources, so I want to find a windows manager that uses the least amount of resources, according to my friend which is Icewm. Is that true?

Also, is it possible to share files between linux and windows like you can share files between two windows machines? I wanna use linux for download, and then move it to my windows machine..... what is an easy option for this??

As for a comparasin of window managers, try XWinMan.org.

If you want MY advice though, go with Fluxbox. It's as fast a TWM, and a hell of a lot prettier.

Is Fluxbox compatable with KDE/Gnome?

I'm looking for a fast WM for a really slow machine I have that's running the PowerPC port of Debian.

Workin: It is compatible with Gnome. I'm not sure how well it works with the KDE desktop (I know it supports KDE panel apps) but it's worth a shot.

Thanks Electrode. I looked at the sourceforge site and it says Gnome is supported. Then I looked at the Debian package listing and it said Gnome and KDE were supported. So.... I guess I'll give it a try as soon as I have the time.

What audio player are you using, and does it play mpeg? I saw your screen shot.

What is a good MPEG player? I have been using XMMS for audio and its pretty cool I guess.

Can I use Winamp visualizations on XMMS?

Also, how do I get Quake 3 arena to play on my linux box? I have the Win98 Quake Arena CD.

You guess? There isn't much better than XMMS, on Linux or any platform!

Yes. There is a winamp vis plugin wrapper for XMMS, check xmms.org.

This is covered in the FAQ project thread. Basicly, you just need to get the Linux Q3A installer from id's FTP or a mirror, run it, then copy pak0.pak from your Q3A CD.

Hey Electrode, what skin are/were you using for XMMS in that screenshot? I couldn't find it at the XMMS website and it is really sharp looking.
