FATEs are nothing more than XP events, they work very similarly to GW2's implementation except with a better UI implementation imo. I mean they work quite well with the auto-join, readily available information in the GUI, and level sync, but they're nothing special that I've seen. The later areas may have some more extensive/chaining ones, but I wouldn't expect them to have impact much of anything.

Also you can alt-tab. Even FFXI allows that now lol.

But is there a windowed mode that also allows you to maximize the window? That's how I always played WoW as I could easily swap to a browser window yet my game window was stuck in place (since it was maximized on my main screen). I've seen some games with a windowed mode option, but they lack the maximize button.

There's windowed, borderless windowed, and full-screen modes available, and I believe the windowed options have maximizing options and scale to fit your screen. I'll let you know for certain on this next phase.

Edit: Running borderless windowed flawlessly @2560x1440.

I don't think I even made it that far in the game. It was really hard to play when I kept dying because of my Internet connection being so flaky. I had a lot more success with WoW (even over dial-up) because my connection didn't go through those short lag bursts anymore.

Whoa your last quote freaked me out because I didn't remember saying it. You fooled me!

Servers up for the weekend. To account for Japanese players the beta weekends run roughly from early Friday to early Sunday FYI.

Phase 1 weekends started in Feb I believe, but I wasn't part of that myself. Phase 2 started in early April and ran for 3-4 weekends then was offline for a few weeks until Phase 3 was available as of last weekend. With release coming late in August, I'd expect Phase 3 to probably be available for 1-2 more weekends, then offline most of July with Phase 4 (aka: open beta) probably running in August. I would guess Phase 4 will probably be when we'll see more extensive uptime, if they do it at all prior to release.

I want to play the beta but I seriously doubt my laptop can handle this game.

I'm sure it could. The game scales remarkably well for how good it looks. Run the benchmark tool if you're not sure how the game will look.

I'd hope it can run on your laptop, the game engine is about 4-5 years old. I like it, but am a little skeptical how end game will turn out. I'll make the decision before release.

Got in and played during Phase 3. I really really liked it. So much so that I preordered the digital collectors after playing for a few hours. GMG had a good deal for it which made it easy to at 25% off.

I have been wanting to play it ever since the servers were taken down, can not wait. Damn it like I need an MMO with the amount of unplayed games I have lol.

I did the exact same thing. I finally got a beta key (after signing up nearly 2 years ago) and I was pleasantly surprised by everything I saw and did in game. I was highly skeptical because I read combat wasn't anything special and really, it's not but there's something about the game that really gave me that old EQ1 feel.

Also, I'm currently out of town and all I have is my 11" laptop (which has a GT 650M) and a 23" monitor I brought along with me. The game looks gorgeous and runs amazingly well on my laptop at 1080p. I was pleasantly surprised. So much so, I ordered right after the beta.

Really thought I was done getting buying MMOs for a while but every time one gets close to release, I'm like a junkie trying to get my fix back.

I did too. Question, did you get a code in your confirmation email for the early access? I see many mentions of it, but I see no code.

Yeah, it definitely has an old school vibe to it (in a good way). Seems the biggest gripe people have is as you mentioned the combat, but I found it to be decent. Sure it is your typical type of combat but with some like twists in it. I like the limit break stuff for groups and think that is a cool little feature, though I don't think it is completely fair to judge the games combat fully till we are high leveled and truly get to see it with all the skills and stuff.

I am really happy that they are not doing flying mounts. They really take you out of the game world imo. This MMO really seems to want to immerse you into it but have given you the tools to be able to do things quickly if you want as well. The Aethernet is nicely done with being able to travel around quickly and with having mounts getting to a certain spot shouldn't take long at all.

A lot of stuff (be it names, sounds, creatures, etc) gives me a big grin as a long time FF fan (mainly of the first half of the series).

I found the game ran really well too and it looks great. The devs said that there will be higher res textures and DX11 at launch which should be awesome as well. The sound/music is top notch.

I enjoy the class/job system and like the way they have it all setup and even made a separate armory inventory for all the different gear you will need as you level up various class/jobs.

Ton of stuff I just don't know crap about but look at menus and windows for, can't wait.

I've already accepted the fact that I'll probably always play an MMO in some fashion for as far as I can tell. I will say though, I am actually happy that they are staying with the standard subscription model though. I've found that with F2P and B2P games, the community/user base is generally a lot worse in most regards next to sub based games (WoW withstanding as their community is ugh, but that is part of blizz's fault for making the game accessible to anyone that can move an avatar).

Yeah, in the order confirmation email I got right underneath where it says FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Digital Collector's Edition (NA) in a big green box it has Activation Key listed with my key there. Can't actually use it yet though till the preorder activation site allows them to be entered.

Reading all of this and hearing people talk about the beta (here and elsewhere) makes me really wish I could get a beta key and try it out. Hell, I may just pre-order the collector's edition (physical) anyway! If I don't like it, it wouldn't be the first Square-Enix game that I've purchased to let sit on my shelf. *coughFinalFantasyXII-XIIIcough*

Nice...mine has FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Digital Collector's Edition (NA) in a big green box and that's it. It's like one thing after another telling me not to get this game lol.

That is what my email looks like with the obvious white box being where I cut out the code

GMG may have ran out of keys and will send you one later. You can try contacting and asking them. I've dealt with their customer service once or twice and they were always helpful and pretty quick.

I got a key, but not a beta key with the preorder.

This is one of the mmorpgs that I actually can't wait to play. I thought tera would be the one but after playing it for about 2-3 days I got sick of it. Even my friend who normally doesn't bother with MMORPGs is really interested in it.

For those of you wanting to try before you buy, there will be an open beta (which is the next phase). Probably the end of July or in August.

I'm thoroughly pleased. Aside from the fact that they changed my primary class' exp earned, therefor his level. So now I have a bunch of old gear that I can't wear because it's too high level. Blah!

I guess I'll get to crafting again (that was the primary thing I did in V1).

Actually, along those lines, I never did get to test out the crafting system this round. Has anyone else been able to?

yup.

It's a bit different, I think they simplified it a bit and streamlined it a lot. I stopped playing V1 after about a month so I don't know if they tweaked it later. I think its enjoyable, they really reward you for HQing or attempting to HQ now (+100% exp? or something).

But it doesn't take 5 minutes to craft one thing anymore, which is really nice. It feels like I'm really trying hard to HQ instead of praying, and some of the skills you get later are super good for HQing stuff. I feel it needs a bit of balancing in that regard but its still nice.
