I liked the grind in FFXI. Not because it was dull, but because it allowed you to challenge yourself and your party. It was open to allow that. It was annoying at times in order to get anything progressive done (missions/quests/farming/serious exp'ing) you needed at least a 2+ hour block of time, but I was used to it. It was a what I'd like to call a hardcore game, for players that were more serious. Casual gaming didn't become a thing in FFXI until the introduction of Fields of Valor tasks came around, but that also brought level sync'ing, which was a tremendous blessing.

The thing that bothers me about FFXIV is how much emphasis they placed on being able to solo play. The party requirements in FFXI was what brought about community and challenge to the game. FFXIV was too boring and too easy.

FF14 isnt salvagable, its a peice of crap.

When's the last time you played? I heard how bad the initial reviews were, I skipped it because of them. When ToR announced they were going welfare I went looking for a new MMO and gave XIV a shot, I was rather pleasantly surprised. Not that there aren't some things that I would like to see improved, but it seems that 2.0 is going to handle that and then some. I also talked one of my friends who played at launch into trying it out again, he was shocked that it was the same game(he told me not to waste my time, $10 with a month included to me is zero risk). We are both playing now looking forward to 2.0 hitting at which point we have a couple more of our RL friends climbing aboard.

I played FF XI alot.. too much for how long it took get stuff done (MMORPG Addict, i play um all for a few months at least, cant jusdge any game by a few hours or weeks, especially MMORPG'S).. I quit after Aht Urhgan and its "copy WoW instance".. while I dont like grind, if you build your game around it then make it easy street for those who come after... your just asking to piss off your current players.

As for grind, in the old days i understood it it was just the way it was, but as so many games can be good without it, making the game last by adding GRIND is not something I will put up with anymore. Grind is the weak way of making a game last.. add content. Again... when i say grind I mean ASIAN game grind.. I have no problem with a level taking some time.. WoW is an example of way to fast. (but one can make a game of leveling too, I have (for fun) raced others in my guild to max level). There is middle ground. You ahve games like Lineage II (quite possibly the slowest grindfest ever, i hear its changed nowdays) and WoW , almost the fastest leveling game. something in the middle is needed.

But.. again.. off track for me.. I enjoyed alot about FF XI so was interested int eh newer one.. but EVERYTHING i read said it was a mess at launch, even after exstensive fixes i heard it was still a mess... and now it sounds like more changes. So somebody who plays it.. how is the grind compared to FFXi in about 08?

AoConan revamp has made that game quite good, but nobody will know as it sucked so hard after level 30 to endgame nobody will take anotehr look.. Is the New FF online the same.. is it a much better game now? Worth a second look?

When's the last time you played?
Dureing beta

I made up my mind then, sometimes you just "know" something is soooo far off from its goal,
it ll never be "right". Its the fundamentals of the game, or the people behinde it..... it just turned out wrong.

Im sure theyve done minor stuff to try and fix the mess they made, however it ll never be what it should have been, a FF11 successor that took all the good stuff of FF11 and carried that on.

Honestly I feel like they took a gigantic crap on their "player audience" in favor of trying something more causal/WoW player mentality /Consol player friendly, in the hopes of being the next WoW.

Result? peice of crap no one wants to play.

FFXI didnt really have grind.
Sure it took along time to level up, but so what? the fact that you needed a group (to levelup) made the gameplay alot of fun.
All these new mmos, where you play them like a single player game, levelup to max level in 1 week and then just do some light hearted pvp = suckage.

In ffxi, the leveling up part (the grind) was fun! it didnt feel like a chore, and you had tons of other stuff you could do mean while.
(so few mmos actually make you group up, for anything but endgame..... in FFXI you did almost everything as a team, but there was still alot of stuff you could do solo)

Dont feel like leveling up? go fish and use cooking to cook some food for your next leveling session (food plays a big part in this game).
Dont feel like leveling up? go make some Ninja tools, save yourself some gil compaired to buying of auction house.
Dont feel like leveling up? go mine / woodcutting for some log(s) or ore(s).
Dont feel like leveling up? go level a craft up.
Dont feel like leveling up? go to a ALT and do some gardening in moghouse.
Dont feel like leveling up? go camp a NM spawn point, and get those rare gloves(or such), that ll make you a badass for your level.
Dont feel like leveling up? go get part of a item you ll need for a quest lateron.
Dont feel like leveling up? go do some BCNM runs for money(Gil) / item that ll make you badass.
Dont feel like leveling up? go Farm some lowbie monsters for crafting drops or BCNM seals.
Dont feel like leveling up? go unlock that new weapon skill, or Quest for a job ability you need
Dont feel like leveling up? go unlock a new class (so maybe lateron you can play that class)
Dont feel like leveling up? play the stock market (ei, buy low, sell high, on auction house) (when stock of crafting items go low = time to sell).
Dont feel like leveling up? go help a friend (needing teams to do stuff, actually means you still have things to do, even if you ran out of stuff to do)
Dont feel like leveling up? go get some lockpicks and solo a area hunting treasure chests.
Dont feel like leveling up? go do some Map quests, for area's where your missing maps (haveing a map of every area in the game is usefull)
Dont feel like leveling up? go do some moghouse exit quests.
Dont feel like leveling up? ....
ect
ect
ect

There was a million things to do in FF11, compaired to most other MMOs that just feel empty.

So RIP ff14, your fate was sealed the moment you were released. Atleast you had a proper farewell.

End of an Era video was pretty sweet. Looks like xiv 2.0 beta starts around end of jan/early feb. 2.0 release will probably be in april. For the most part it looks like it should be a solid game. I hope this time they don't rush it out and actually release it when it's ready.

Agreed. I'm hoping it's released sooner than April though... considering how long they have already been working on it. But you are right about not rushing it out too soon.

As an avid fan of FFXI, I wholeheartedly agree with Arkadrel aboveabout the fun factor of FFXI. That being said, I am sincerely expecting "A Realm Reborn" to be every bit as enjoyable as its online RPG predecessor.

I find it funny how FF14 was so terrible they had to destroy the actual game world, shut down the servers to implement a new rebranded game just to undo the atrocity.

Me and one of my good friends are both eagerly awaiting A Realm Reborn, I think it's absolutely worth trying at least.

I watched the video last night and that is probably one of the most awesome trailers/cutscenes I have ever seen. 4/4 of my friends that watched agree as well lol.

It doesn't really have anything to do with the game itself but it sure is cool. It actually makes me want to know a bit more about current FFXIV "lore" and curious how/if the story changes. I was initially thinking that the Realm Reborn would be the same game, just re-done. I didn't realize they were making it a story event, so in theory you'll probably be seeing a lot of all new quests/story content/characters/etc on top of the re-engineered game.

It was never answered but I really want to know if Cid and the grand company leader survive the fight as they were not teleported. We all know Gaius will survive as he will be the main bad guys in 2.0

For those who have had a bad experience with FFXIV -- and rightly so -- I do strongly encourage you to take a look at 2.0 when it launches. Since Yoshi-P took over development, the game has improved leaps and bounds, despite a terrible and limiting server structure.

Now that everything is being rebuilt from the ground up, 2.0 is already receiving high praise from those who have had the chance to see it in action. They've already demonstrated an amazing number of characters on screen, a very impressive zoom/draw distance, completely rebuilt zones and a revamped UI. Exact details on 2.0 content is still a little sparse, but what they've done recently in 1.0 bodes very well for the game's future.

My understanding is that anyone who bought a copy of the game can download the new client for free when it's released and there will be another one month free trial. I wouldn't dare ask anyone to blindly accept 2.0 as a fantastic game, but if you give it a chance and keep an open mind, I think a lot of people will be quite surprised.

That trailer was fricking awesome. Would have made for a great actual FF game ;p (with gameplay..not just cutscenes).

Did they remove the dumbass market wards yet?

Nope. They tried way too hard to salvage that crappy system. They did make things better with a search feature...much better. But I really hope they haven't transitioned the wards into 2.0

I'm gonna try 2.0, and I think it has the chance to be a decent game. But in my opinion it's a pitty they didn't start from scratch.

Interesting... I would be trying this game out when it does relaunch with ARR. Anyone has a date for when it is to be release? From what I could gather everything points to the end of the year and not Q1 2013. But I haven't researched much. Any information is appreciated.

I do hope they bring back the AH. The whole "hire a slave to stand in the market for you" thing just wasn't efficient lol, and one of the best parts about FFXI was the AH for me.

They've not yet shown what will become of the market wards in 2.0.

hopefully become an auction house. Absolutely braindead implementation that focuses more on asthetics than functionality.

Having a little mannequin you can pose in the markets is apparently more important than people actually being able to buy things they want.

I think they're using a Blizzard-like approach at the moment. They can't afford to let Reborn flop, so they haven't set any hard dates. So, it depends on how Beta testing goes once they reach that point I'm sure. They just sent out the first round of Alpha test invites for the worldwide regions (as opposed to Japan-only) a few days ago.

Last I heard it was going to probably come out around March-April probably. They don't want to rush it out as they can't afford for another instance of what happened the first time.
