I had this same problem Saturday. i just went into the TS folder and played the video from there.

MickeySoft charges an Arm/Leg for an OS these days. A working DVD/Bluray/Other DLL isn't really asking too much IMO. Make it a separate Download after the OS has been Verified, but come on already this kinda situation shouldn't be happening.

That said, I use WinXP Pro 64 which is based off WinServer 2003 and Installing PowerDVD fixed this issue for me. I suppose it's possible that XP Pro 64 has been tweaked more than WinServer for regular use though.

Some DVD's come with a Player on the disk, if it gives the Option to Play when the initial Autorun goes, try it. If not, try VLC as suggested.

Out of perverse curiosity, any chance you could give the hardware and movie a shot with Mint? I'd laugh my buns right off if it worked.

And yeah, piracy is definitely starting to look good thanks to increasingly broken DRM. Still, legitimate media in a pretty box is so cheap. Near instant gratification and having the title where I can easily move it around the house or schlep to my parents are a bonus too. In my case, bought media advantages outweigh the value add of a torrent. For now.

My wife's rather extensive iTunes collection stopped working when I upgraded her motherboard. To my knowledge she hasn't bought a single song from them since. I should probably tell her they're going DRM-free...

There has been a program for WinXP for years called DVD Region Killer V2.7 that, when combined with a firmware update to your DVD drive, completes removal of regional BS so you can play all your DVDs trouble-free. Problem is it's old and no longer updated and it's doubtful it would work on a different, newer OS like Win7.

DVD43 is great for removing protection so you can back up your DVDs, but that's a lot of work, time, and electricity used instead of removing the Regional BS from your computer in the first place so all DVDs play just fine in WMP11 or MPC or whatever you might want to use software-wise.

I wonder if there's a program similar to DVD Region Killer for Win7...?

Sure, but DVDs with DRM aren?t standard, and neither are audio CDs for that matter.

Plenty of discs have trouble with standalone drives, especially those that use physical surface protection DRM. Valkyrie won?t even play on my standalone but it plays on my PC?s drives just fine. In fact I have two PC DVD drives because even they can have issues with discs sometimes, so I have the second one to fall back on.

I have a 1st gen DVD player made by Sony that hasn't failed to play any disk ever.

Now I use my PS3 though, usually don't bother with DVDs for new releases since Blu-Ray is multiple times better.

That just means you got lucky. Again, DRM (especially physical surface protection) is not a DVD standard which means no player is guaranteed to play it properly, and many don?t.

You can see the obvious inclusive/exclusive fallacy you are making here, right?

I've read your posts before, I know you are smart enough to know to not conclude that everyone else's experience is limited to only that which you have experienced...

I ended up getting the movie to work by downloading a 30-day PowerDVD trial.

The version I tried to use originally was old, but has worked in the past--that is why I was completely surprised and pissed-off.

I haven't upgraded my hardware in a long time, and the only difference between watching DVDs and Googling about troubleshooting have been time and Windows updates.

In any case, I'm going to have to figure something out when this trial runs out. Anyone have a log cabin for sale--preferably away from powerlines?
