WHAT THE FUCK?

I'm running winserver2003 will all of the updates. I tried to use windows media player to play a dvd--NO GO.

I then install my old copy of PowerDVD (which has worked in the past)--NO GO.

The Windows troubleshooter's solution is to point me toward buying $10-$50 "software packs."

What the fuck is this shit? How hard is it to play a dee vee dee up in this motherfucker?

I make this post in jest. I was hoping to watch a movie tonight...

Edit: 9800GTX vid card, not that it should matter. Seems like an OS issue. FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

I forget, but don't the server OS'es install video cards with the acceleration slider in display properties all the way down? Maybe that's the issue?

Dawn of the Dead.

Windows Media Player is giving me the DRM bullshit, despite this being a legit copy. PowerDVD just goes ahead and quits.

Whose dick to I have to suck around here to get Windows to play a DVD in 2009?

What makes me lol is anyone could chose from one of the hundreds of high definition pirated copies out there, and they will all work flawlessly

Cant discuss how to pirate and specifics like that on AT. Was just pointing out how DRM is making things such a hassle for legit people even though its fundamentally flawed. There will never be an uncrackable DRM in the foreseeable future and its only going to give legit owners more hassle, while the torrents run 24/7.

I just recently had trouble playing a DVD on my htpc as well. I tried to play Titan AE and what I got was a program installed onto my computer, and it didn't even ask for my permission to be installed (I probably got some rootkit installed too now...). I uninstalled it and busted my old DVD player out and got the movie going. Which then preceded to die on me (stutters and whatnot after playing for a while). Fortunately, the movie wasn't really worth it so I just gave up.

I never expect to get a blu-ray player for myself. It's just seems absurd how much money and equipment you need to play back movies now, all because of DRM.

I think that I'll "fix" my "problem" by hitting up the torrents from now on.

Thanks MPAA and Microsoft! I can almost taste the savings. I'm going to tally up how much my legit, hard-copy DVD collection is worth, and set up a tab for myself, fuckers.

Guys I do not advocate piracy/illegal-torrents/etc but to provide some info as to the technical reasoning why newer DVD's fail to play in older DVD players as well as on your HTPC I must refer you to some documentation presented in software packages that allow you to rip DVD's to your computer (for legal reasons hopefully).

This is what trips up your old DVD players:

WHAT DOES IT DO?: DVD43 will decrypt (unlock) a movie DVD so that your copy program can read it. If the DVD structure is non standard or the DVD contains bad sectors, your copy program needs to take care of that. Outdated copy software like DVDXCopy can't handle bad sectors commonly found on newer DVDs. You need a copy program that provides frequent updates to handle new movies as they are released. I have included a list of programs (at the bottom of this page) which are compatible with DVD43. Only one (1Click DVD Copy) was able to copy all the DVDs I tested without errors.

http://www.dvd43.com/

I have an integrated DVD player in my minivan that can't play any of the latest Disney DVD's for my kids, store-bought legit copies, because of all the DRM intentionally bad-sector crap they put at the beginning of the DVD's now.

If you don't use a decrypter program like DVD43 and a ripper program like 1ClickDVD to get the movie onto your HTPC then the bad sectors deal will prevent your computer's DVD player from successfully navigating thru the reading-errors that the DRM was designed to generate.

Do not use these programs to rip and pirate, but understand what these programs were created to accomplish as therein lies the information you need to understand the technical issues at play with the OP's conundrum with his legit DVD.

in the meantime syntax is right. you don't have to play it as an ISO either. just rip the video TS folder and the majority of players will play it.

I'm sad that it has gotten to this point with DRM. Someone with a legitimate copy and a DVD player, any DVD player, should be able to play the movie without issues. A standard user should not have to use multiple programs to unlock their legal copy so it can be used in a DVD player from a few years back. My VHS player from the 80s still plays VHS movies from ~2000. Thanks MPAA, we appreciate your efforts.

No dvd player has problems playing standard DVDs. The OP is trying to use a PC where software issues arise at times.

Tell that to my Philips DVD player from 1999 as well as my built-in DVD player in my minivan from 2005, neither will play any Disney DVD released post-2004.

On my Philips it actually shuts the damn thing off like a power-virus hit it (just turns off), and on my minivan it just takes eons to read the disc and concludes by flashing "disc not compatible" on the screen.

Sure, but DVDs with DRM aren?t standard, and neither are audio CDs for that matter.

Plenty of discs have trouble with standalone drives, especially those that use physical surface protection DRM. Valkyrie won?t even play on my standalone but it plays on my PC?s drives just fine. In fact I have two PC DVD drives because even they can have issues with discs sometimes, so I have the second one to fall back on.
