Fiat Chrysler says it is recalling 1.1 million vehicles worldwide, including 811,586 midsize SUVs and full-size cars in the U.S., to try to alleviate confusion about when the vehicles' automatic transmission is in the "park" position, which has resulted in 41 injuries.
Drivers have been getting out of the vehicles without shifting into park while the engine is still running. The problem involves vehicles with electronic shift levers on their consoles that spring back to the same position after being shifted. Drivers can't tell by looking at the shifter's position whether it is in park. Instead, they have to depend on indicator lights, Fiat Chrysler says.
I didn't mind the shifter, are they seriously going to change the shifter just because people are too stupid to check if the "P" is illuminated? It's even displayed on the instrument cluster.

Why not just reprogram the computers so the trans automatically shifts to park when you turn off the car? Wouldn't that be much easier/cheaper?

I do agree that it was an odd design, but it didn't take that long to get used to. I understand changing for the next year, but to recall for something like this is ridiculousThey planned to change it almost as soon as it was introduced, iirc. It got a lot of complaints.
The 2016 GC was changed to a much better designed shifter.

Isn't that even one of the supposed perks of the keyless cars, is that you can get out and it'll auto-lock once the fob gets out of range and you don't have to pull the key?

Because the entire point is you might want to leave the car running? Say its a particularly cold or hot day and you want to leave the HVAC on while you run into a store for a few minutes. Its my understanding that you can do that with the keyless ignition, and that the car will auto-lock the doors once the keyfob is out of range but could keep the car running.

But also, there seemed to be a definite issue as even aware drivers made note of the transmission being a bit finicky in that regard.
