Wow, awesome thread! I could use 10mbit

Does anyone have any more information about WOW? I cannot find any information on the website about how fast their connection is.

Thanks,

People fail to mention that this service has 3 different tiers. The lowest tier which is $50/mo does have 10Mbps up and down which should be a crime but you get 30GB of usage of up and down whichever is greater. I think exceeding that amount like like less than $2 per gigabyte. Then it goes to like $70 and $100 tiers which gives more usage per month. As long as you're not using it constantly for big file transfers, you should be safe. It's still more than worth the money. They offer more than one IP address for like $3/mo.

I'm in Upper Arlington Ohio, they show service to me but after calling I foun out it's only cable TV right now. The guy told me they plan to have internet in 2-3 months and had no idea about the speed or priceing. WOW I hope I can get the 10mb service! How can www sites keep up with speeds like that?! It seems like most of the time my cable modem is limited by how fast the www site is, and how in the world can they afford to give everyone a 10mb connection for only like 50 a month?! It just sounds crazy!

I've got Insight (used to be @Home, but Insight bought them out) and I typically get 500k/sec downloads. The most I've seen is 656k/sec, but anywhere between 500 & 600 is typical. It's been this way ever since I first got it.

this is how my @home used to be before they switched it to AT&T (I live in SLC). My UL was only 128kbit UL, but my download would go as fast as the web server would send (my max would be 650k/sec or so). Most servers would only send @ 100k/sec or so (which is what AT&T has limited me to now). But to get around this, go download Download Accelerator it chops up the download so you're not always limited by the caps they put on servers. I wish I still had @home and not this mofo AT&T bo shee.

Man...this is probably faster than my 14.4 modem! In all honesty i dont know what i'd do with all the bandwidth....maybe start a ftp server, or better yet our very own anandtech forum, or just host a bunch of pics of JLH!!!

wow...this may be hot now but its not gonna last long.

no provider in their right mind could possibly afford the connection charges of hundreds of thousands of users downloading 10 mbps for only $50/month. heck, a t1 line is only 1.5 mpbs and they go for anywhere from $600-1500/month. im sure this company will disappoint us just like freedsl did!

just my 2 cents

THEY WILL NOT GO OUT OF BUSINESS. THIS IS JUST LIKE CABLE MODEM, EVERYBODY SHARE THE SAME LINE, SO AS PEAK HOURS, THERE WILL VE A SLOW DOWN.

THE STATED VERY CLEARLY, UP TO 10MPS, THE KEYWORD HERE IS "UP TO"

THIS IS A VERY GOOD BUSINESS MODEL, COMBINE ALL DATA, VIDEO, & VOICE INTO ONE PACKAGE. I DON'T KNOW WHY IT'S TAKE THESE COMPANY SO LONG TO GET TO THIS POINT. MAYBE BECAUSE OF THE ALMOST MONOPOLY CABLE AND PHONE COMPANY TRY TO STOP THESE COMPANY FOR MORE PROFIT.

This will be super hot. Too bad Wisconsin is always one of the last states to get anything cool. People accross the Illinois border will have this 2-5 years before we ever see it.

All this had wringing.

I too, lament "only" having ATT Broadband (MediaOne) in Mass.

I'd like to vote with my dollars.

Who, how, where do I "sign-up" / vote?

How to support the establishment of such a business?

Without a competitor, I don't see any reason for restraint on the fees demanded from consumers.

Can a "franchise" be bought from WinFirst?

Simply mimic their business plan / equipment?

About that wideopenwest site that was posted, what type of speeds are they claiming? They say that broadband should be available after first quarter 2002, which is nowish. I'm in Michigan, and it sounds really interesting, although I can't get any numbers from their website. Any help?

It's too bad they don't cover the other side of Northgage Blvd., just north of Highway 80. It'd be nice to be able to go into Fry's and see it in operation there if they'd set up a demo.

I'd even stop on my way to Reno sometime. I go into that store from time-to-time just to browse as it's so much less crowded and hectic compared to those in the Bay Area.

IF they brought this service to Davis they would get a couple thousands signs ups in the first month I would bet. Davis DSL has got to be the worst DSL ever. With all the college students in Davis they would have no problem. Davis is only a few miles away from sacramento. Come on expansion.

This is switched, so there are no bandwidth-sharing issues similar to cablemodems. Obviously it's "up to" 10Mbps; if you're downloading from somebody on a 14.4 modem, you're not going to get 10Mbps. As always, the speed you get downloading depends on a lot more than your isp.

Also, somebody was asking above about the WOW 3Mbps limit, if you add $20/month you get 10Mbps.

From what I've "heard", it is not likely that Winfirst will go out of business anytime soon. They are providing a superior service compared to companies like ATT Broadband but don't quite yet have the financial resources to expand rapidly. In order for ATT Broadband to stay competitive and stay in business with the competition, ATT is financially backed/invested in Winfirst to make money in the long run. Eventually, ATT will be running thru the same fiber optic lines that Winfirst has laid(which was proly backed by ATT). We'll see.

Ok, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say this company is not going to go out of business as some have said.
Who here wouldn't pay $50/month for this if it were available in your area? I have DSL and I'm paying $50/mo
already. I suspect those who are considering DSL, on DSL, on cable, on satelite would jump on this.
If would if it was in my area.
