Well, they're proly thinking they don't care if they dissapoint sacramento. Proly be worse to dissapoint Silicon Valley. heh. Or maybe with the recent probs with tech companies, Silicon Valley said, "Go try that $hit on someone else!" LOL

I don't know how long it takes to run fresh cable in a city with over 1million people but 3 years may not be that unreasonable. I think they barely have 2500 customers so far in sacramento....if that. I'm guessing they're not layin all the cable down just yet.........I would guess that they would lay additional cable as customers increase(to pay for the cabling). If ATT is backing Winfirst, I doubt ATT would give Winfast enough money to lay all the cable......ATT cable service would diminish fast! ATT is gonna milk they're cable service for as long as they can.

No, a 10mb connection means 10 megabaud or 10 mega bits per second. To get mega BYTES per second you must divide by 8. 10/8=1.25 megaBYTES per second. Note that this is theoretical maximum, and doesn't include overhead. Besides that, most servers probably won't let you download that fast. Personally I get 150 to 160 kbytes/sec out of my 1.5 mbit DSL which is pretty good.

I just got word about the setup costs. A friend of mine inquired about the service in Sacramento because he's lucky enough to live smack dab in the middle of the availablity range. He told me that setup was $1500 for 10mbps u/d and 45 bucks a month + isp fees. Still a good deal though, but the setup fee is kinda high ain't it?

Yeah I know it's high, but that's what he told me. My parents are moving to Sacramento so I'll have them look into it. Is it true that it's not unlimited use? 30/60/90 gig upload/download plans?

Okay, the $1500 set-up fee kinda killed the delicious deal. Now I don't feel so bad anymore ;-)

I have a cable modem and get 300-400kbyte d/l all the time all for around 40 a month. So even if this fiber service were available here, I'd stay with the cable and enjoy the UNLIMITED d/l limit. I d/l 30gb a month easy so that would suck paying extra. And by the way, people saying I hope it comes to me, thats a big hope because so much work has to be done to install the fiber optic wiring through any region. Before the recession we're currently having came the fiber was being installed like crazy but the slowdown in the economy kinda brought it to a hault. Wait a year or so and hopefully it picks up again. Once we're all connected by fiber, our world will be a much happier place

Hi,

New poster here....

I live in Sac, and am looking into Winfirst also. After talking to them, and reading posts at DSLReports, I've discovered the following:

  • There is NO setup costs to the consumer. It may cost them $1500 to hook up a house, though.
  • They CAN roll out to an appartment, as long as they have permission from the appartment manager (this is important because I live in an appartment).

Service should be available to me in the middle of February. If you want, I can let people know how it goes.

Just called em. I live in Citrus Heights (right outside Sacto). They said they should be in my area in 6 months... But I'm moving in 6 months.... damn it.
Looks like I have to survive the hell of ATT...

I live in Ames, IA. You suppose they'd run a couple thousand miles of fiber to get to my house?
