Can someone explain this whole 'equal pay' thing?

We all know that the Men's World Cup generates substansially more revenue than the Women's Cup (more TV revenue and attendance - the TV rights are handled under one contract but the viewership is astronomically higher for men's games than women's)....Both teams exited in the round of 16, so the US Men's team earned $13M and the Women's teams earned $1.9M. Most of this money comes from FIFA. Under the new agreement, this money is combined into one pot and then split between both teams so both teams now earn $7.5M (the winner of the Women's World cup will get around $4M).

This agreement makes sense if all of the money were coming from US Soccer but it isn't.

So I guess that is equal but it that fair/right? I guess they know that FIFA won't be doing a 50/50 split between men and women anytime soon. Wonder what will happen if the men's team doesn't even make the world cup and the women's team does (I would guess that teams still earn money for the qualification games so that money would be split evenly)...

On top this, the women's team gets medical benefits but the men's team does not.

Women get bruised more easily and they have to pay for their make-up.

they actually suffer a much higher concussion rate than the men do, and in fact I think for professional female soccer players, their lifetime concussion rate is the highest among all athletes in the world. (men have a bit more natural head protection because men are...well, dumber. ba-dum pish)

So, continue being a shit if you want.

Something that should deter them from trying to be more like men.

Yet, feminism...

When communism is equal, is it fair?

Even if all the money came from US Soccer only, I don't think the above pay out description makes sense. I'm all for "equal pay for equal work" but is it appropriate in sports? Like you said, there is a huge gap commercially. Although the USWNT is extremely successful, they just don't pull in the same revenue as men's soccer does. I suspect this battle was first waged in pro tennis decades ago, and the women did win equal pay at Grand Slams. Based on the revenue generation disparity between the ATP and WTA, it's fair to question whether that's deserved. Don't forget men still play best of 5 sets at the Grand Slams, while women play 3.

From a philosophical perspective, if women and men deserve equal pay, why have separate leagues or competitions? Throw everyone into the same pool regardless of gender and everyone is required to do the same work? </ sarcasm>

To be clear, the data shows there is a pay gap in society as a whole and that is usually wrong. For many jobs, men and women are in fact doing the same work and should be compensated similarly. But it's hard to see how this strictly applies to endeavors such as sports or entertainment; you get paid relative to revenue generation in your profession. Taylor Swift is currently performing in the most lucrative concert tours ever. Should other music artists, male and female, be paid the same as Swift?

Some men are just finding out what is been like to be women in just one small way for the last few thousand years and they don't like it. It's funny, but also sad, but funny too.

Great final.

No penalty kick shootout.

Only goal a shot that had to be perfect and was.

Rubiales: "no, You hold my beer." He's claiming the kiss was consensual.

Consensual or not, my thinking was that covid-19 is a thing still and you don't behave like that because of contagion concerns at this time for certain. In any case, it was clear to me when I saw it (live TV) that he was way over the top and those were not consensual embraces he was administering. And yes, the suggestion that he had been drinking makes a lot of sense here. Yes he should be fired. Well, the women are saying they're going to walk if he doesn't, so duh.
