Can someone explain this whole 'equal pay' thing?
We all know that the Men's World Cup generates substansially more revenue than the Women's Cup (more TV revenue and attendance - the TV rights are handled under one contract but the viewership is astronomically higher for men's games than women's)....Both teams exited in the round of 16, so the US Men's team earned $13M and the Women's teams earned $1.9M. Most of this money comes from FIFA. Under the new agreement, this money is combined into one pot and then split between both teams so both teams now earn $7.5M (the winner of the Women's World cup will get around $4M).
This agreement makes sense if all of the money were coming from US Soccer but it isn't.
So I guess that is equal but it that fair/right? I guess they know that FIFA won't be doing a 50/50 split between men and women anytime soon. Wonder what will happen if the men's team doesn't even make the world cup and the women's team does (I would guess that teams still earn money for the qualification games so that money would be split evenly)...
On top this, the women's team gets medical benefits but the men's team does not.
