I doubt there's a thread, because Americans don't care about soccer... I am not even sure what FIFA is (some sort of governing body of soccer? does it have anything to do with the world cup?).

This is just warm up matches, it's not the actual FIFA world cup, no care.

FIFA runs the world cup. This is called Confederation's Cup, also run by FIFA.

They have to play Spain, they have about... no chance.

Yep it was basically a miracle. They are not that great of a team even if they qualified, I don't think they played world football.

even if they did, I am pretty sure the refs will prevent the US from wining it all.

This is not warm ups. Confederations cup... basically teams from every continent compete... different format than world cup, and yes it means a lot.

No they just aren't good enough to win anything. Believe me, Brasil will dance all over them with their 3rd squad in.

It means so much that Italy, one of the best teams in the world, decided it wasn't worth the effort.

I've never seen a team in any level of any sport (other then if getting paid to lose) not want to win.

Italy was never expected to beat Brazil, they are much better team than Italy... I know they won the world cup and everything, but that was 2006.
So how about Italy is not as good as they used to be.

Egypt was the team that should have qualified, but they did not take it...I don't care if they were missing 3 players or whatever, and that they got robbed in South Africa...they did not play on that pitch like they wanted to qualify... so they are losers.

You obviously don't know any Italians who watch soccer fans.

Frankly, I can't imagine them not putting 100% effort against Brazil, even if it were a friendly.

This tournament is fairly meaningless. It's an exhibition for the host country a year before the actual (and probably only) world-wide tournament that matters.

It doesn't count for qualifying, therefore most teams are playing to test matchups and are avoiding injury. The Brazil-Italy game was definitely lopsided yesterday, but neither team was tackling hard, etc.

The Confederations Cup happens a year before the WC, basically right before qualifiers kick into high gear. No team is selling out to win the Confed Cup at the price of its World Cup qualification. At least, no sane team.

Italy-Brazil is always a show, though. Usually a closer match, but it draws viewers. I really hope those two teams meet again in the World Cup, and no earlier than the Semifinal round.

They still play for a cup. I agree this is no World Cup, but definitely great team recognition... I bet you there were a lot of pissed off Italians last night.... every football game between nations mean a lot, it always has... even when they say it is friendly.

Absolutely. Definitely a ton of pissed off Italians in my neck of the woods (here in the US), myself included.

I think both teams played soft soccer, but Brazil put 3 on the sheet, and that's what matters.

I would've been even more pissed off if Italy had won at the expense of an injury to, say, Pirlo, though. Brazil fans probably would've thought the same if it meant Robinho blowing out his knee or something.

If anything, though, it makes me want next summer to come even sooner

Yep it is going to be godly IMO.
I hope Morocco qualifies, people are really really pissed off since they didn't make it in 06...there is so much politics, some players aren't showing up, staff getting fired, it's a mess. Then again when/if they qualify it will just be another disappointment. realistically, they stand no change in making it to any round. World cup isn't just about playing the game... mental toughness, discipline, organization, etc... so many factors that make a good team.

I think the Italy team is in a tough period right now in that their experienced players are getting quite old, but their younger players aren't really ready to take over yet.

Heck, if you look at their current squad, it's still basically the same one that won the WC 3 years ago! With this team, I can see them doing ok next year, but can't see them as real contenders.

Importance given to soccer tournaments by most soccer fans, players and media:

1.- World Cup
2.- Continental cup ( European cup , Copa america , etc , by continent)
3.- International club tournaments ( Champions league in europe , libertadores cup in America )
4.- Local league championships (each country has its own)
5.- Confederations cup
5.- Olympics soccer

I know that it "thechnically it still a tournament" and its great to win it , but its a relative 'young' cup and no big deal is given to it pretty much anywhere.

You're mixing up the national and club tournaments, which I think are different enough that they should be separate lists.

That said, I agree that the Confederations cup isn't really a big deal for almost anyone. But I can't argue with some good matches in the summer when there isn't much going on in the soccer world!
