well my email is from my ISP (shaw cable),
and ever since i installed the router, it can't be accessed (ie. when trying to get new messages, it says it can't contact the mail server)

other programs work fine though, i can file transfer in ICQ, morpheus works.

well if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

oh yeah, the program it uses is netscape communicator.

You can verify that this is unlikely by taking it out of the loop. Connect your PC directly to the cable modem and try it again...betcha it won't work either...check your email settings...

First, connect the comp directly to the cable modem as mentioned before. If that works, open up port 110. If it doesn't, check your ISP. They might have changed the email server name (PacBell did this to me last month without notifying anyone).

You might try pinging your mail-server from a Dos window, then grab the IP addy, and put that in instead of the "mail-server" name.'
I had to do this on one router install some time ago.

i cant even ping the mail server?
is the mailserver supposed to be just one word, or should there be a path like
http:// or something like that infront of it?

because in the email profile, for server name it just says 'shawmail'.

You need the fully qualified name - mail.shaw.com or shawmail.shaw.com or whatever it is. Make sure you can ping that address. If you still can't get mail, your router probably has port 110 blocked. If you can receive and not send, your router has port 25 blocked.

The router must support domain name suffixing. This is usually xxx.xx.home.com where xxx is your node name and xx is the two letter state abbreviation. On the SMC routers, you put this value in where it said domain. If your router doesn't do this, you need the full name in your email program. The same goes for news.

EDIT: I noticed your screen shot and you're using a SMC barricade. Change the default "WORKGOUP" domain to the full domain suffix given by your cable provider. To test that it works, you should be able to ping news and mail directly from your desktop. Once you make the change, you will need to reboot the router and any pc behind it. If you don't want to reboot the pc's you can release and renew the ip addresses and the router will push the new config.

Cheers!

If you hav the mail server set to 'mail' in Outlook, it wont work anymore. What you need to do is set the pop3 and smtp servers to their true addresses. I think on the yellow sheet that the cable guys gave you when they installed the service for you, it should list the servers real addresses.

I think when it was Rogers, mine used to be something like ' poco1.bc.rogers.athome.bc.ca ' .. A very long string anyway - I've no clue what it is now that Shaw's running the show (and @home's out of the picture) though. You might want to give tech support a ring.

Edit: Check out the link Mr. Burns posted.
