$17 is too much for a cd. I want the songs I want, cd quality, at a reasonable price without having to buy the rest of the stuff on the album. Therefore, I buy an average of one cd a year. It's usually a band that I like pretty much all of their work, or albums that combine hits from several different artists I like. I WILL NEVER PAY $17 FOR A CD WITH ONE OR TWO SONGS I LIKE. I would almost rather pay $10/month for satellite radio or listen to the local stations. I think a lot of people feel the same way I do. The only people I know who buy lots of cds are kids who eventually stop when they figure how bad they are getting ripped. I don't download a bunch of music either, I have no file sharing software on my computer. I just my money on more reasonably priced entertainment.

sorry man rent takes a healthy chunk out of the pay check, then there are the credit card bills from when i was laid off. then there are the medical bills from the broken jaw when i didnt have health insurance, then the repairs to my 500 dollar car that i have had for 2+ years that i need to get to work. Cd's come in really low on that list. Cd's are not the high priority item that is at the top of everyones mind.

If i get em for free online, fine. If not, I go back to having everyone bring their cds over when i have parties and burning a lot. What cds i do buy are straight from the bands.

Who has said that 100% of leaches will start purchasing CDs again if they are no longer able to acquire them for free? No one. You might not start buying CDs, but there are plenty who will. Even if 25% start buying again they will have achieved a significant return.
It wouldn't be 25%. Maybe 5 % at best!

waste servers, winMX, IRC, usenet, all that's still working.

and on top of that the number is worthless because the drop took place during the summer, when millions of college students lose their high speed net access when they go home.

yeah.. what kind of drops have we seen in years past at around that time?

Tell me why do you think it is BS? Do you really believe that Sales would increase dramatically, especially considering the crap that is released today? Many people will download the music because it is free but wouldn't even consider wasting their money on it!

And there are plenty of people who DO download the music for free simply because they don't want to spend their money on the CD. Once they're unable to download music for free they'll most certainly start purchasing the CDs.

Perhaps an analogy might be some people on welfare; certainly there are some who wouldn't be able to find work if the were no longer receiving welfare checks, but there are plenty of people who would get off their arse and find a job as well.
I seriously doubt there would be a significant increase. The reason is most who download do it because it's free. If they had to pay for it they'd just do without because it is not worth the money.

Agreed, but as in my last post, I'm not saying they'll get a hugely significant increase in sales. A percentage of people will go back to purchasing CDs, and any return is better than no return.

Is there any way I can legally buy CDs without going through the RIAA?

I bought Radiohead's Hail to the Thief a few days ago and it's one of those craptacular non-cds that won't let me rip the songs for portable use. That was the straw that broke the camel's back, I've had enough of the RIAA and will never be sending another dime their way. So I'm now looking for ways to legally buy music without paying anything to the RIAA, is there such a service?

I use filesharing to download albums primarily to see if they're good. If I like what I hear, they I usually buy the album, but if it's just got one good song, fogeddaboutit.

Doh, I can't keep up with your replies

Ok, so 5%. That's still pretty significant I imagine, and keep in mind that opponents of a faction don't always go into a battle to win. A small victory for RIAA (suing the end-user) will have a dent in the casual, non-technical user. It will hard to impact those who "know better", but fear and propaganda is a pretty good strategic step for them it seems.

I do the same. We used to have local shops that would allow you to listen to CDs before you bought them, but now you pretty much have to buy them because their "listen before you buy" policies are so strict.

If I can't download music, then I'll go back to downloading porn. RIAA tactics have backfired, kitten population beware.

I've only purchased one CD in a while... I borrowed the CD from a friend, ripped the whole thing... listened to it a couple of times. Saw the band playing at a local bar. Purchased the exact same CD that I had already ripped to help support the band. But, I told the band member "if you make it big time, live in a 40 room mansion, and are doinging 2 different chicks at the same time every night, I'm just going to download your stuff from Kazaa"

btw, Since I hate getting crappy quality mp3's on Kazaa, this will force more people off Kazaa and I can get more of my friends involved in "burn your entire collection of CD's to DVD's in a high quality format, and we'll trade dvd's."

BMW doesn't try to sell me a car with only 1 or 2 good features. With RIAA, I know 10 out of 11 songs will be crappy...

With BMW, I know it's going to be German quality all over ...

How is the RIAA responsible for the quality of a musician's music? Maybe you should just listen to better music?

Oh, and "German quality" isn't always a good thing.

members of the riaa are the ones that set the price on cds, not musicians.

pretty much. They are only a few cds I consider buying, but those are few and far apart. I rather buy DVD, you get a movie, great sound, lots of extra content, and it only costs about the same price as a cd.

There is no value in buying a cd. There is more so in a DVD of a movie.

Dialup does that for me.

/me oggles his 160gb drive literally full of disk images in need of burning

CD sales will increase nominally.
What will happen is that the normal people will go back to asking their informed friends to help him acquire the music.
Like it was not a few short years ago.
