File Sharing on XP Home Network

I have 3Com NICs networking my two PCs. I have really liked the file sharing features of the 3Com software. I recently installed XP on one of my PCs (still have 98SE on my older P133). I have looked everywhere and can?t figure out how a file is to be shared between the two PCs. I have run the network wizard with no problem. The modem sharing is working fine. I right click on files and folders and change the properties to shared. But when I go to the second PC, I don?t know where to look for the shared file or folder. I hope I'm overlooking something real simple.

I have tried to reinstall my 3Com software and it keeps directing me to the XP control panel (for the XP networking software).

Can anyone please tell me to locate a shared file on my secondary PC? Thanks, Ron

im not sure which pc you are trying to access and which one you are accessing from, but I have found that the fastest and most reliable way to access another pc on windows systems is to go to start, run... then type "\\<computername>" or "\\<ipadress>" where, obviously, <computername> is the computer name on the network and <ipadress> is the ip address.

this is not necessarily the least complicated way but once you get used to it it is really fast and easy. you can usually just go to "network neighborhood" in win98 or "computers near me" in winxp, but it doesnt always work as well as it should.

Thanks. I'll give this a try. I'm trying to access the filex on my winxp pc from my 98se pc. When I had 98se on both, I used the Network Neighborhood" icon and it worked great. In fact, I had shortcuts to the files on my other Pc on my desktop - worked great - just like here at work where I have shortcuts all over the place to our 8 or 10 network drives.
Where is this "Computers near me" folder or icon in XP? Thanks again. Ron

it is in "My Network Places" which is either in your start menu or on your desktop depending on what start menu style you are using.

Thanks. I did a total reinstall of XP tonight and tackled networking first. I see the My Network Places now and, in it, I see all the files I have set to share on my other PC. However, I can't find such a file on my other PC. Any thoughts? Thanks again. Ron
