File sharing

File sharing help....
I am having some problems being able to share files/printer on my network. My PC is running WinXP Pro, and my laptop is on XP Home. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4, and a WPC11.

I have no problems with internet access. It worked from the very beginning after installation. I can ping my PC fine, and always have a connection.

In my network, my PC only shows the workgroup, but no computers. My laptop shows itself in the workgroup. I have my drives shared on both, and they show to be shared.

One thing that I did notice is that on my desktop, it will not let me turn on file and print sharing. When I select it and hit apply, it comes up with a message saying that it will disable it. I have tired using the network wizard several times with different configurations to no avail.

Any ideas?

Two things.

Make sure you are logged in as administrator on the dektop pc running winXP pro.
If you dont know how to do this, log off, and at the logon screen press: control-alt-delete-delete.

Secondly, make sure both comps are running all the same network protocols in Network Neighborhood

I'm on as administrator, and as far as I can tell, both protocols are the same. Networking is new to me, so I'm still learning.

What network protocols do you have listed for each machine?
Also, make sure you have the WinXP Firewall disabled.

On the laptop:

Wireless Adapter: Client, File and Print share, Qos, and TCP/IP are checked. On 1394 Adapter, Client, File and Print share, and TCP/IP are checked.


On the desktop:

Lan connection: Only QoS and TCP/IP are checked. I can check Client and File share, but it will not let me save the change. The 1394 adapter on the desktop is configured the same as laptop.

XP Firewall is off. I also haved drives on both PC shared(Hand under drive).

Hmm, you should have client for MS networks installed, try clicking on installing that again.

You might also try installing IPX/SPX on both machines.

It's weird....I can check Client and File share, but when I click apply, I get a message saying that it will disable it. I have set up several networks on it, and always the same. IPX/SPX???????

Click Install/protocol

I run that(IPX/SPX), TCP/IP and Netbeui for winxp on my machines.

although it's not recommended u might want to install the NetBios Protocols. I had the same problem with file sharing until i did that. It might make u more vulnerable but if u have proper protection it shouldn't matter.
