Final Fantasy 2 and 3 8-Bit Nintendo Japenese Versions

I just finished Final Fantasy 1 in my goal to play all the old final fantasies. I obviously started with my dusty old Final Fantasy 1 in my 8-bit nintendo. It was fun, I didn't remember half of it, couldn't believe that airships were in the first one but they are.

Now I completed this maybe 2 days ago. And I started playing Super Nintendo's Final Fantasy II (US Version)

Reading through walkthroughs online I came to the astonishing fact that I am in fact not playing FFII but FFIV!

So I went searching and found FFII and FFIII japanese versions. Has anyone played through these and are they any revealing to storylines or are they the least favorite of the series?

Debating whether its worth the time.

The storylines are not related to any of the other Final Fantasy games. None of the regular series of games are really related to each other except X and X-2.* You don't have to play the original Japanese NES versions of II and III, you can play III on the DS and II on the PSP or GBA.


* Before anyone jumps down my throat, I'm referring to the regular series of JRPGs, not the non-JRPGs like Dirge of Cerberus. @ OP - in short, any Final Fantasy games that have related plots also have the same numbered title.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. In my defense I have only played fully through US versions of 1, 2, 3 and mystic quest. FFVII I just tried to get up and running on vista and it just wasn't having it. I have yet to try FFVIII. I own both of these but never got around to finishing them while going to college.

Oh and btw it sounds like you played the japenese 2 and 3. Are they any good?

Yes, the III that is on the DS.

Yes, the numbering is confusing... II/IV and III/VI on the SNES were the only ones that were ever numbered differently in the US. Anything released starting with VII, including re-releases of old games, has used the correct numbers from the Japanese series. Final Fantasy "II" and "III" were re-released on the Playstation and Gameboy Advance as IV and VI, etc.

Don't know about the 8bit version but the PSP version of old school FF2 sucks. Its too easy and there's no captivating story ala US' SNES FFII/III.

The level system is also "interesting". But, to be fair, I think the story is far better than the FF1 story, which is what it should be compared to (given the games' ages). I'm about halfway through the PSP version right now, and it's pretty good, IMHO.

As for Crystal Chronicles (Gamecube): it's good if you've got friends, GBAs, GC-to-GBA link cables, and regular playing dates. It's a bit meh otherwise. I've read that Ring of Fates on the DS is better, but I haven't played it yet.

Sometimes the FF games can take place in the same world, but they usually don't have the same characters. Like FFXII and FFT both take place in Ivalice.

lol, too bad you dont have a psp you could have just gotten final fantasy 1/2 with nice updated graphics but same story and monsters. I remember playing final fantasy 1 not even knowing that is what an rpg was but i loved it. When I was 17 or so I loaded up the final fantasy 1 card from when I was 9 and I was at the end at level 99 with every guy lol, ah youth.

Squaresoft has milked the FF games endlessly, so they are available on quite a few systems.

Here are the systems you can find Final Fantasy I, II and III on (using Japanese naming):

Final Fantasy I:

NES
Playstation (called "Final Fantasy Origins")
Gameboy Advance ("Final Fantasy Origins")
Sony PSP ("Final Fantasy I")

Final Fantasy II

NES (Japan only)
Playstation (called "Final Fantasy Origins")
Gameboy Advance ("Final Fantasy Origins")
Sony PSP ("Final Fantasy II")

Final Fantasy III

NES (Japan only)
Nintendo DS ("Final Fantasy III")

Now, the difinitive versions of the games are basically any of the Final Fantasy I or II remakes (Origins has improved graphics, Final Fantasy I and II for PSP has even more improved graphics than Origins, though marginally).

Final Fantasy III for the DS is basically a total remake of FF3 for the NES, using a 3d engine, etc. They cleaned up the storyline which was extremely vague (there are partially translated versions out there, which show how spotty the storyline was originally).

Just a heads up too, if any of you are fans of the SNES Final Fantasy II game (now called Final Fantasy IV, due to this being the Japanese title), there is a 3d remake coming out on the Nintendo DS sometime this year (it was released last December in Japan) and it looks awesome!

oh wow really that is awesome, most people like 4, it was the first one to add some decent optional content and decent story...hmmm now when 6 is ready for a 3d overhaul sign me up.

Oh yeah I forgot about Tactics. The one for PS1 was pretty good I thought and hopefully the upcoming DS will be good. Might be worth picking up.

Thanks. I didn't realize that its better with the GBA ( or is it a requirement? ). I guess it wouldn't be worth picking it up used for $15 though without a GBA if that is the case.

For multiplayer, each person needs their own GBA and link cable. For single-player, you only need a standard GC controller (and a GBA plus link cable, if you want the map).
