I bought it around 10 years ago, and it was fun. Not as good as FF6 or FF9, but still it was enjoyable. It wasn't good enough that I would buy a new copy though, as I would rather play FF 4 or 6 again than 7.

i thought about buying it... until i read this http://truepcgaming.com/2012/08/14/final-fantasy-vii-pc-re-release-impressions/

after i read that i instantly lost any interest i had in it.

Strange issues that reviewer saw, that I don't see on my end.

The assets weren't updated, but it DOES look superior (to me) compared to the console version. To me, it looks more natural than you can get it to look with epsxe+shark or psx-r with all the best plugins. The one issue I have, actually, are the sound effects/music, which does not sound the same as the original.

I have it on the PS3 and it's definitely still a good game. Sure it's not the greatest RPG ever but it introduced Jrpg's to the masses and the gfx were insane. At that point we had never seen such graphics in a game. Couple that with the awesome summons, it's easy to see why so many people love it.

I loved this game back when it first came out. I'd played FF4/FF6 half a dozen times on console, and this was such a huge upgrade. The '3d' graphics, the materia system which I still think is one of the coolest magic systems ever and to this day I regret they never bothered to continue down that road and refine it. Then there was the open world aspect, all the secret areas and things you could do that weren't part of the main storyline.

Having said that, it makes me sick to my stomach that all they did was a few incredibly minor tweaks to the graphics and some bug fixes. Such a great opportunity they blew here. An upgraded engine, some true graphics upgrades (and I'm not talking about the type you get from emulators and player mods, those are paltry at best), updated cutscene graphics, and this could have been a huge hit.

The Way It's Meant to be Played™

Amen to that! With a RGB SCART cable on a CRT.

I recently replayed my original black box copy on a PS2 "fat" and did a perfect save file challenge. I couldn't do the 5000 points on the roller coaster for the Umbrella, the reticle controls just seemed lagged and jerky.

I thought maybe it was frame interpolation or upscale processor in my AE4000 projector, so I hooked it up to a old tube in composite. NOPE! Same thing? Also noticed the credits that scrolled on the title screen would jerk and skip. Hmm..

Dug out my Aug 1995 SCPH-1001 model PS1 and tried it. FLAWLESS. Smooth as glass. I also noticed immediately how much smoother the rest of the game was as well; I was oblivious and just chalked it up to being an old game.

Moral: fvck emulation.

Yes I know the PS2 has the R3000, etc PS1 hardware, but it doesn't have the PS1 graphics processor, so there is a emulation or translation layer between native PS1 games and the native PS2 Graphics Synthesizer, among other things.

Now days I only play PS1 games on a real PS1 on this:

Those games are probably worth a decent penny nowadays too.

Just did some browsing around of old super nintendo games (sure brings back tons of memories) and prices on amazon are insane. Of course, not sure if those games actually sell for those prices, but still.

Man, sometimes, even with today's high tech hardware and graphics, you just can't beat the fun/entertainment that these older consoles provided.

Still playing the original version, even though its buggy.

The DRM and annoyances introduced in the new version arent worth the hassle. Also, the free boost kills the challenge in the game which is the main reason for having it be difficult. Especially the Weapons.

It hasn't aged nearly as well as I had expected, but its far from overrated

yeah theres certainly better stuff now but it was a HUGE leap forward in console japanese RPG's and completely changed the genre. In fact they went with the playstation over the N64 specifically so they could do all the cool stuff they had fantasized about for years.

I caved and bought it. I do own the old pc version and all this talk got me to install again and try with mods. My laptop isn't good enough to run it modded (openGL and ATI seem to not like each other) so I bought the new one for $10.

They use updated models in combat, not high res, just not as blocky. I don't know, I play a lot of old games like UT and Chrono Trigger and others from time to time so graphics aren't a huge hinderance for me. I play for the gameplay, and I love the materia system.

I wish it were an offline game, I usually steer very clear of DRM online crap but I broke my own rules on this one, I couldn't help it, had that urge ya know?!

I haven't run into any bugs yet. When Installing I had to be very patient when the loader was running the first time. It was stuck at 10% for 5 min or so, I quit it and tried again, same thing. I started it again, played on my iphone for a bit and then boom, when I looked up later on (no more than 10 min) it was done. I have an older laptop so that may have contributed to the slowness.

In regards to the cloud saves, I wish it acted like steam and just kept a copy locally and then uploaded saves when you quit the game. Sometimes in-game you need to wait for the saves to load before you can save, weird, I know. So I need to be patient yet again. NEVER more than 10 seconds but it feels like an eternity before a boss fight

For $10 I am happy with my purchase overall. There is already upgraded music around and I'm sure other mods will come soon too.

BTW, I've played all FF up until and stopped at VII. I am on the fence if III/VI or VII is the best. They have their highs and lows. If I were on an island and could only take one game with me for the rest of my life (between these two only, of course I'd take Civ IV ) I would take FF III.

I find it laughable that they put an online DRM on it. Screw them. They went to 0 effort aside from "oh shit we don't want anyone to pirate it!" as if that isn't going to happen. Game companies have become trash...and yet..people still pay.. The emulators run fine.

I agree. Seriously what the hell. The game has been around for so long; anybody that is going to pirate it already has done so. I have a copy of the game that will last forever, and they are offering a copy of the game that will last until their authentication servers go offline.. hmmmmm Think I'll keep my current copy and run it on an emulator. I own the old pc version of the game with no dlc, the ps1 discs, and a digital copy on my psp. Yeah, I've bought the game 3 times... that's a -300% piracy rate. I'm not going to be treated like a pirate with online verification. Wasn't going to buy anyways.

I don't need an enhanced limited version.

So since this re-release has been a flop, what is the best way to replay this on a PC? PC version + mods or a PSX emulator? Is there a guide somewhere detailing what needs to be installed?

Assuming "always online" doesn't bother you, this port is arguably the best way to play it currently.

EPSXE+shark with the best plugins or PCSX-Reloaded with the best plugins will not look as natural, but will sound better IMO.

I don't have an issue with always online but I'm not a huge fan of 3 installs. Maybe I'll bite the bullet.

You forgot to mention Secret of Mana.

Well I think that about covers most of the must have games from the SNES (just include USA FF2 and FF3, Super Castlevania IV, Mega Man X, Super Mario Kart, and Chrono Trigger and the list is complete (well, I guess if you want to stay true to the era, TMNT: Turtles in Time, and Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo)).
