My Collector Edition just arrived, a day early! It actually went out for delivery Saturday but I wasn't around so they held onto it.

This game is basically going to consume my video game life for the next...I don't even know how long. I fear for my life right now.

I am going to be honest, I spent more hours playing Blitz Ball in FFX than doing anything else. Everyone on my team (except my goalie, because he never got to do anything) were an incredibly high level. Luckily, the players I recruited were locked into their cheap contracts too! I had a guy named Rop who was just phenomenal.

Great idea Square- remake the good RPGs before you ruined them with WOW mechanics.

Bad idea Square- should have started with Cloud's Tale.

I enjoyed winning games by scoring one goal and then sitting behind the goals; the AI bugged out and you could just run the clock out and win the matches. Perfect for grinding for Wakka's final weapon.

It's not a remake, it's a remaster. No one ever seems to understand this.

Trying to remake FF7 would take so much it's almost not worth it.

The problem with remaking FF7 is that all the nostalgia glasses wearing people who praise it would be horrified in just how mediocre it actually was. Very few people who had experienced RPGs (especially FFs) prior to 7s release found it so amazing.

What is the difference?

Trying to remake FF7 would take so much it's almost not worth it.

A remade FF7 would sell like 10 million PS4s by itself. I don't see how that isn't worth the development cost. Would be cheaper than a new game but sell much better.

Remaster = taking original assets and enhancing them; in this case, upscaling, HD audio, etc.
This game being an example

Remake is taking an original game and developing it again from the ground up; new assets and all.
Metal Gear Solid vs Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes being an example

Look at the scale of many games now and remember the scale of FF7; it would not be cheaper at all.

One is just a straight port .exe with the original 4 GB of assets. The other has 25-50 GB of assets.

My understanding is that this X Remaster has new textures and maps. It sounds to me like someone that puts together a HD texture pack for a N64 game. What is the line between new textures and a complete redo? Replacing the engine underneath? Re-rendering the FMV? Heck I would take a 'remastered" FF7 if that is all we can get.

And yes, I know FF7 is not the greatest RPG ever. I would be like 4 or 5 for me.

BUT some of the plot elements were pretty revolutionary at the time (a main character dying, an unreliable narrator, etc.). Plus, lets be honest, any remake would add a little extra that would make it worth a replay. Square always does that with FF updates to new platforms, and honestly FF7 was lacking in extra stuff at the end.

Heck if they added in the long fabled resurrection of Aerith at the end of the game then we are talking about the greatest selling PS4 game of all time. Nostalgia is a strong motivator, and retrogaming is a big thing right now. FF7 was Square's peak, heck it killed the N64, why not remind people how important they once were?

FF4 DS = complete remake.
CT DS = straight port.
FFX HD = remaster.

Problems with FF7:

1) it really was not that great, and a redo today would make it obvious just how bad it was and ruin it for a lot of people.

2) the pre rendered screens and depth buffers were 320x240, and its likely given their hesitation they don't have the original 3D scenes from which to re render in 1080.

3) the scenes with their fixed camera angles were more simplistic than they looked: redoing in real time 3D would require a ton of content to be created that originally did not exist.

4) the models were crap. The characters had hooves for hands and feet and no faces ffs.

That said I don't see why it couldn't be approached as a new game. With the speed they can turn out new models and 3D scenes for a XIII game every two weeks, it should be pretty straight forward to tackle a known world and character cast. The FF7 world and scene collection and number of unique locations was NOT big at all. At least 50% of the entire game was even duplicated across all three discs to eliminate disc swapping as you revisited places.

I think the real reason is they know it was terrible and would rather not disturb people's memories of the almighty Square of old. If FF7 HD came out and people realized how much it actually sucked and the mainstream audience knocked Square off their pedestal, it would be the end of Square.

If they do ever get to it, I hope its an entirely new game that revisits the old story in the updated writing and art direction of the Advent Children movie which was 100x the writing that FF7 never was.

And that ending...god awful. After the grand ending sequence of IV and VI, that 15 second FMV ending of VII is inexcusable and unforgivable and not worthy of the Final Fantasy title

Ok given what you said I want a remake not a remaster if done. I would expect a PS4 FF7 re-release would have redone FMV, character models, etc. Unless they did it more low-key (like an Android/iOS release), then I would be happy with the PC version's look plus the PS1 version 's sound. That would be more than enough actually, I hate that the best version of FF7 comes from an emulator.

Of course what I actually want is a new JRPG at the classic Square level of quality but that corpse is dead dead. Will just have to replay Crystal Chronicles and dream...

If there is any game that ever transcended its media... that was constrained by its platform...and undone by the sheer magnitude of scope of its megaverse and by its own ambition too far ahead of its time and deserving of a proper modern AAA remake...

Its Xenogears.

If there is any justice in this world we would see a proper Xenogears remake as it was originally meant to be long before a pitiful FF7 remake.

If a real, proper AAA Xenogears were released, they'd have to make it multiplatform to help recoup how much money it would take. I'd love it, but sadly, I don't think it would sell particularly well in today's gamer climate.

Although, you then have to ask... what would a remake do? Would it change everything around completely? You know... get rid of the pre-rendered backgrounds for 3D worlds similar to FFXIII? Or would they use higher-resolution backgrounds that are similar to the original to keep the same aesthetic? I could definitely see the character models and FMVs being updated, but if I had one thing I could directly affect, I would hope that (unlike FFX), they leave the music alone. You do not mess with Uematsu's work!

Honestly, I think the best that we're getting anymore is on the 3DS. :\

Xenogears was a pretty awesome game. I loved its minigame too, played it 2 player with my sister a lot.

I would hope they would use pre-rendered backgrounds again. More complex models everywhere, completely redone FMV, and some new stuff at the end, but the same music and battle style.

And I completely get that JRPGs are dead. My big thing recently is even with a decent level of dedication I never played all the bigs ones during their prime (especially non-Square ones), so there is more for me to play in my past than in gaming's future.

I really sucks that JRPGs have waned in popularity. With the advancing technology and media size, we could really get some massively epic JRPGs. Sadly, everyone would rather play Skyrim than Wild Arms.

So how about that Final Fantasy X? :\

I never had a PS2 so I never got the chance to play it (my last console was an XBOX - I've been exclusively pc gaming since). I just got a PS3 earlier this year to play some of the terrific console only games and right now FFX is at the top of the list. I still have a ton of backlog to play through after that; the PS4 slim will probably be on the horizon by the time I'm done.

You know I have the CE on the way.

Honestly, the art included in it, while skim, is beautiful. I love the art prints, and some of the art in FFX is the best in the series and in all RPGs.

I want to just get home and start playing

Ahhh Wild Arms, that was a fun game. I will never forget the first time I beat Rago Ragla.

So how about that Final Fantasy X? :\

Last good FF game that wasn't on a portable. A little too on-the-rails for my tastes to be my favorite, but Blitzball is epic.
