Auto-combat and endless running through corridors... I lasted about 2hrs then I gave up on FFXIII. Doubt I'll ever finish it. What a disappointment.

That's too bad, it had a top 3 story for this franchise. Very well thought out story and an interesting ending. I felt like it was worth the grind of finishing the game just to finish the story.

I mostly thought the story was dumb and uninteresting. A story requires the characters to be likeable to care what happens to them. Or even unlikable so that they get their just desserts. However, these guys just caused complete and total apathy in me. Just so unlikable, they reached a point where I just didn't care any which way.

Also, usage of the codex to explain everything was a dumb way to let us know what the hell was going on. Why couldn't they explain any of it during the story so I don't have to spend a ton of time reading codex's to figure out what the hell they are talking about? Only redeeming part of the story was the lesbians.

I think if they bring back the ff12 fighting system minus the license system and I honestly would not care if the story was bad because it would be fun and intuitive instead of a boring chore like 13-1 was to me at least but when you change something that is religiously followed like final fantasy the consoquinces will never be the same

I've given up on FF. They just aren't as good as the older ones anymore, it's all about graphics and making new battle systems now. I'd rather go back and play ff7, ff3, etc.

I never finished 9 on PS and hated 10 on PS2. FF isn't what it used to be any more.

and I honestly would not care if the story was bad because..

No offense, but.....wtf???

I hope you're joking, or at least exaggerating, because that is precisely what is wrong with the series these days: the story and characters taking a back seat to the fighting/magic systems.

I don't get it. How you could not care about the story (or care if its bad or not) in an FF game, or any role-playing game, is baffling to me.

All I'm saying is the ff12 was fun to play the story was garbage but the story's in every final fantasy has been WTF with the exception of
FF6, ff12 had a battle system that was a step in the right direction in my opinion now I don't expect to see a good ff story that is an omage to the classic nes-snes games especially sync square can sell us the old ones over and over and over for our ds,psp's and iPhone's respectively and we buy them just like sonic or the starwars prequel's we have none to blame but ourselves for buying it and enabling the developers

That is what FF has been about since FF3....

Except 4, 5, 6 and 7 all had very interesting systems.

4 basically utilized archetypes... nothing groundbreaking, but all the characters were UNIQUE and were interesting within the story.

5 had a wonderful job system. Not many games had picked up on that style yet.

6 let you customize your characters via the Esper system, though in the end, your entire party was kitted with all the 3rd level spells plus Doom, X-Zone, Merton, etc. Still, the unique abilities of each character were REALLY fun (Tools, Blitz, Leap/Rage, Runic, etc).

7 introduced the materia system which was really fun. Still, it was basically a re-imagining of FF6's system.

8 bothered me because they removed too much focus on equipment. The junction system was interesting but not really like "wow this is awesome".

9 was a return to FF's roots and was more like 4 and 6. Classic character archetypes with fun, unique abilities. I really enjoyed 9 for those reasons.

10 I enjoyed but never finished... I was way late to the party. I honestly can't remember too much about the battle system.

Never touched X-2, XI or XII.

XIII... just make a fucking movie sequel already since it's obvious that's what the franchise is evolving towards. Auto-combat and corridors. Boring as fuck. The aesthetics were BEAUTIFUL... and completely wasted thanks to the piss-poor battle system and annoying characters.

Sure, but interesting is just a personal opinion...

I personally found XIII's battle system to be very interesting. I actually was quite fond of it later on, though it was limited in the beginning.

I liked how some of the battles in XIII were more difficult than any other FF, which were all extremely easy.

What changed for you? I despised not having full control of my party. Personally I prefer depth of the system and the storyline WAY over ease/difficulty.

Honestly Square just needs to transition the FF franchise into pure cinema at this point...

I'm not sure myself, I want it to be good so I'm going to try to stay open-minded about it.

In fairness, when you have something that is so highly regarded anything you do with it after that is going to be met with criticism.

I still think I'll buy it either way.

I have been playing FF games for a long time, and I must say that I was massively disappointed by FFXIII. The story was a snore fest, and to be honest I am starting to think that FF games are better with as little voice acting as possible. The characters were annoying, and the pigeon hole experience was even worse. I dozed off while playing the game a few times and at that point I was done with it. Just my opinion though it seems others loved it.

I don't have it any more and no idea where my PS1 is.

Well, you wouldn't need an original PlayStation, you can play PSX games on any PlayStation 2 or any PlayStation 3, including the ones that don't have PS2 backwards compatibilty. It's actually not impossible to find Final Fantasy IX for sale used, or even new, in retail stores, but you can also buy the game as a PlayStation Network download for the PS3 and PSP.

...or you could buy a brand new hard copy for $12.

That said, I hated FF 9 (yes, I finished it), and never understood its appeal. Perhaps it brought out the nostalgia in gamers, but I found the story to be pretty weak, the villain(s) to be horrible, and the cast of characters to one of the worst in a FF game. Vivi and Steiner were fun, but other characters like Quina (sp?) have to be some of the stupidest I've ever seen.

I did like the music though. But I like the music in all Final Fantasy games.
