I couldn't wait so I went ahead and bought it. Hopefully I can find a good server to play on. I'd like to start lvling up all the classes and crafts now and not waiting and starting from scratch when things get better.

u know the best server to start on?

Hmm...good question. I'm on Bhodum, which is probably in the lower half in terms of server population, but I'm not sure how much it varies between servers. I think I like it that way, at least for now...there's enough people that I can usually find a group to do something I'm in the mood for, and while there's some competition at times for mobs to grind or NMs, it's not unmanageable. I'm in several friendly LSs open to anyone and 1 end-game LS. The Ul'dah region tends to be the busiest area, then Limsa, then Gridania (which is practically a ghost town). I imagine most servers are pretty similar, but maybe someone else could speak to that.

The game itself is still user-unfriendly as far as jumping in and understanding what the heck you're supposed to do. Make sure to check out the "Ask the Devs" articles on the FFXIV Lodestone site for some explanations and hopefully you'll meet people in-game who don't mind helping out. Or shoot me a PM if you have questions or want tips on how to get started.

They are doing lots of updates but if you only wanna play the game once its fixed I would say wait for now. It is better than it was at launch but they still have some issues that need to be fixed... ...I'm pretty sure sometime this spring we will see some very important updates that will finally push the game to the point where most will be able to enjoy it.

I'd have to agree with morpheus305 here. They're still anticipating some sweeping changes (couple of examples: changing party sizes and rebalancing classes) that will probably give us a different game in a few months. Well, the same game...but different. It is still no monthly charge though, and the recent changes make it a good time to level up if you're really that interrested (much improved SP gain for Disciple of War and Disciple of Magic classes). They won't be taking our progress away.

How is the soloing aspect? Can Magic classes do it? Been pondering getting involved at some point to give it a go. However if it's grind city I am not interested.

Well, I'll answer your 2nd question first: it's grind city.

Soloing...yeah mages can do it. It's pretty easy to solo up to 20-21 or so. After that, it kinda sucks, especially with today's patch which increased the HP of the mobs everyone used to solo on (coblyns). To give you an idea: if you get 200 SP soloing a certain mob, joining up with 1 other person (if the same rank or very near) will still net you that same 200 SP per kill, but you now kill twice as fast. Add another person or two and SP will go down a little per kill, but you'll even faster. This is how it works currently, but they may tweak it more in the future.

Thank you tedrodai. Don't think I will be jumping in anytime soon.

Not to mention the whole point of getting to the max level is to do endgame in any mmorpg. Right now there's nothing waiting for you at the end, plus you can wear all the rank 50 equipment right off the bat (not saying its a good idea...) so there's nothing at that end of the grind.

Just picked up FFXI again with a few friends I used to play with. I wouldn't mind moving on to FFXIV eventually, but right now XI is just much more enjoyable for us. Cheaper too, and there's so much of the game none of us have seen still.

People are still playing this game?!?

I wish I never bought the collectors edition. Man they castrated the game from beta, and I knew that at the end of beta it wasn't ready, but I figured if they left it about the same with some improvements I could still play it.

Instead at release what do they do? Fuck it up so bad I couldn't play it more than a week. $80 down the drain. Never again will I buy any more fucked up products from this company.

yeah... I feel like it should be conventional wisdom at this point not to pre-order an MMO. it seems like there's way too many things that can and do go wrong.
