You are...I did like the card game though, ha.
LOL, I couldn't have said it better myself!
The story was pretty decent, and the gameplay was fun, but the spell-draws and *constant* junctioning was tedious.
The card game was hands-down the best FF mini-game EVER! I enjoyed that so much....Blitzball, on the other hand, I just wanted to slit my wrists instead of playing that load of crap.
Does anyone have any input for the PC version vs. PS3 version? I have both systems and was thinking about signing up to the beta. I haven't run the benchmarks yet.
For reference I have a Q6600 with a 4870 512MB and put up just over a 10k 3DMark Vantage score (for gpu, cpu, and total) in the default performance mode.

Hmmm...I got a score of 2324 in 1920x1080. I'll run it again at 1280x720.
Edit: 3574 in 1280x720.
That's with a Q6600 at 3.2 GHz and a 4870 512MB at 820/1050.
In the main thread of the bench (I think it was on the hardware news section) we found out several things about the bench:
The CPU is way more improtant than the GPU to attain high scores, as it seems the engine uses many-threads and CPU's with multicore and HT-like technologies would run it better.
It won't detect Crossfire or SLI configurations or benefit from an extra card for physx, so it will run on just one card regardless of what you have on your rig.
And also it won't allow to run maximized, and the windowed mode cut's performance greatly as the system has to render the 2D elements from the windows desktop, so if it let it run maximized everyone's scores should sky-rocket.
So yep it's a fail bench, but for the ones that are not in the beta, like me, we can get a glimpse of FFXIV graphics rendered on our PC's before the game is out
Just some info regarding the FFXIV benchmark, courtesy of OCN.
Bigass thread with a bunch of different computers and reported scores if you want an idea http://www.overclock.net/hardware-news/756407-square-final-fantasy-xiv-benchmark.html
So far it seems to be a pretty damn intense bench, though forcing 720/1080p and windowed isn't doing it any favors either.

2085 with the system in my sig.
Which resolution is that at? It would be helpful for everyone posting benchmarks to include the resolution since that makes a huge difference.
how's everyone in the alpha/beta liking the game?
I've been really trying to talk myself into pre-ordering it... I really liked FFXI on paper but couldn't get past the whole needing a group to do anything thing, which it seems like they're trying to change in XIV. I mean, I don't mind having to group sometimes (thus the MM in mmo) but it's also nice to have the option to progress by myself if I just want to casually relax for a couple hours after work.
and then there was also the language barrier in FFXI. because it was released earlier in JP and the US and everyone was on the same servers, when I was starting out it seemed like the only people around were high level Japanese players that I couldn't communicate with.
I love the concept of being able to be multiple classes with the same character... WoW might have kept my interest with that. as much as I enjoyed playing alts, it always felt like a distraction from the character development of my main (eg: I *could* level my warlock, but shouldn't I really be working towards achievements X, Y, and Z?)

Loki's concerns are exactly the same as mine. When I played FFXI at launch and up until about 3 months down the road, I ran into the same problems and grievances. Auto-translation may be useful in town when nothing is really happening, but during the heat of things - unless you have a photographic memory or a giant list of macros or binds, it becomes a liability to the team when you can't understand what someone is referring to or requesting.
The grouping system was really a hit or miss for me. One bad team could ruin your night, and FFXI was the most forced grouping game I've every played in an MMO. Add in Level Downs and you have a formula of pure frustration.
I played the game on and off through the years and logged in probably a solid 8 months of subscription time... but I'm really on the fence about it. I'm just glad they did away with the whole giant mess of an interface that was PlayOnline, but I heard another similar system is in place and that kinda freaks me out. What I liked about FFXI however was the immersion of the environment. You actually wanted to go out and talk to NPC and find little nooks and crannies in the game.

This is not true; you log directly into the game with your Square Enix ID, which, admittedly, is different than your PlayOnline ID if you had one. Regardless, there's no "middle-man" system for XIV, just a clean, direct login.
are you guys able to post some screen shots?
