He's right about the control issue(mouse support is very awful) and the amount of mobs per zone.

(sorry for the rant, but it's vaguely related to the # mobs thing)
Ultimately I quite FFXI over the frustration of catching NMs -- not sure where the idea that multiple groups fighting over 1 spawn every 30mins or longer would be fun. I got to be pretty good at spotting and catching them quick with my THF, but considering the randomness, it was still difficult and frustrating (when I was playing, at least). Then, after catching 5 NMs during a 2-3 week stint of attempting nothing BUT (with and without groups), I only saw 1 item drop. I even rolled for it and won it; but after everything, I just said "screw it" and gave it to the next best roll--and quit not long after. I REALLY hope FFXIV isn't about fighting over mobs again.

That's probably a good thing, but those posts got me worrying about the supply of NORMAL mobs, which would be even worse!

I REALLY hope FFXIV isn't about fighting over mobs again.

The EQ clone subgenre is pretty strict about limiting item distribution. If you catch the carrot(s) fast, there's nothing to keep you paying.
Rare drops, rare mobs, or timers are all designed to keep you addicted to that path.

Ugh... Talking about these MMOs makse me angry and sad. So much potential lost to the easy addition*-based gameplay.

*that was a typo, but it oddly fits the subject

well, it makes my decision of whether to pre-order FFXIV or Civ5 easier.

Something to ALWAYS remember about MMORPG betas: The vast majority of "feedback" you will hear is how bad it is, how unstable it is, how it's not ready for release for x amount of months, how "dead" it already is.

After release it'll be how overpowered something is, how gimped something is, how a patch will make them cancel their 27 accounts and their whole guild is leaving.

I've been through tons of MMORPG betas since EQ and every...single...one had this exact feedback.

Now the problem is many MMORPG players say they are tired of WoW, but when a game comes out that is actually different they'll say it should have controls like WoW, and items like WoW, and combat like WoW, and quests like WoW, and easy soloing like WoW, and and and and.

Unfortunately so many MMORPG players are probably the worst critics alive. Makes us cool ones look bad.

Unfortunately so many MMORPG players are probably the worst critics alive. Makes us cool ones look bad.

I think it is because of the game genre more than the players themselves. By building a game around this model, there's NO WAY you're going to avoid customers getting frustrated/mad/bored/etc. The worlds are persistent and require a recurring time/money/social/personal investment, yet the developers almost always have utter control over the game content and rules. The devs are gonna make some money out of it, but when we (people in general, whether we play MMOs or not) are getting what we want...we want more of it. And when something suddenly stops us from getting what we want, we pitch a fit, especially if we have no control over it or feel like we have no control over it.

These games are simply big (and complicated) cookie jars, and they attract people with a sweet tooth. Even the wisest man gets a little childish when indulging their sweet tooth, and people expect MASSES of people to be logical, understanding, and friendly when they all have their hand in the cookie jar? Everyone's opinion about the taste is a little different, some have allergies, some overindulge, but the bakers have to prioritize their work to keep the most people coming back. Everyone gets to bring their own plates and utensils, which just invites more problems.

i remember talking to a gamestop associate about this but i forgot the answer i received. is there an incentive to pre-ordering as far as receiving a beta code or anything? i realize that we get to start like 9 days early for a CE but i'm trying to bypass the stupid queues and broken websites and still be able to try it out like i've been attempting to do for the past month and a half.

No mobs to fight either. I have to search for stuff to grind on waiting like 5 mins a mob, in the starter zone.
