its official Square enix is retarded... If they cant make a registration page work after two days they are hopeless..

i was able to receive my beta code this morning before work. it works, you simply have to get lucky or sit there all day hoping that the codes are available or that the site is not being overwhelmed.

edit: i was lucky, but it's fairly simplistic to actually receive the code once you're able to actually apply. it's a matter of agreeing to their terms and clicking apply...that's all there is to it. with a system that simple, you can't really call them retarded b/c eleventy billion people are trying to access it at once. when you discover a way to fix the limitations of the internet that still exist, then you can continue insulting the company that's trying its best to give you access to their game.

Yep, was able to grab one this morning also, and ran through the character creation real quick to see what it was like. Man, the cooks must all be low-level for now, going by everyone's body fat %.

Anyways, to be perfectly fair, they warned everyone how it would happen in the open beta announcement email:

Yeah the updater they're using is complete balls. Mine gets to 99.4% then crashes. I'm redownloading the patch from a torrent but if this doesn't work then I give up.

I know lol. The battle system seems clumsy to me. There aren't enough mobs in the starter area to support open beta let alone release. There are mobs that one hit me for 2500+ damage right outside the town. The natural progression doesn't seem to be fluid. The menus and mouse cursor are so laggy. You can't remap the camera buttons to arrows. While auto running you can't pan the camera using the mouse. Using abilities and switching mobs seems clumsy to me. Spelling errors in the NPC dialog. I can't believe this game will be released in 25+ days.

Other than those gripes, it's a good looking game. I just don't really see what to do or look forward to other than leveling. Granted I am only level 10 but I feel like I don't know what to do next aside from go to the next camp and do Guildleves.

First impression look good. Actually taxes my i7 and 5870 very well. Can run near max with no aa on my 30 inch dell. On the htpc on a 1080P projector it runs like butter.

After playing FF11 for over 5 years now-very little these days- I can remember the sense of awe I had when I loaded up ff11 on NA luanch day.

Combat is different but the first 10 levels its too early to tell whats its really going to be like. The crafting looks deep, the fishing IS AMAZING and there is so much to do even for a beta I am very impressed. The net code seems smooth even on the wireless on a laptop.

Not being able to regen mana in the field is weird but with the ability to change jobs on the fly its cool. Still very early but definately impressed with the game. It appears they didnt go the easy route and make the game too easy which I am happy about.

All in all very good beta all things considered...
BTW FF14 Core had a post with direct downloads from fileplanet. Downloaded the entire game in 14 mins... Do not use the crap SE is pushing...

Their updater leeched 5 gigs from me overnight and downloaded 900 mbs...

Protip-

Hold the left mouse button and use the wads keys for a bit and the controlls seem better. Target with the tab button scrolling trough your enemies... very fast and intuitive..

I might be standing a few steps in front of a mob/char, facing him, and have to tab 20 times to target him, because it tends to start at the farthest point from where I want to end up. I might be fighting a group of 3 mobs, kill one, but the next target I get after pressing tab is the random mob being fought by some other person on the other side of the screen. 20 tabs later, I might possibly get my target on 1 of the other 2 mobs I'm fighting, and it doesn't help that there's a little GUI lag. It's been much easier to click the target for me, though the camera sometimes makes that difficult.

Early on, the pace seems much better than FFXI to me--but then I haven't played it since late 2004 so my memory could be a little rusty . I do remember FFXI being a very slow paced game. The leve quests spawn monsters only you (or your group) can see, so you avoid the lack of monsters thing a little bit; but you have to run a ways usually to reach the monsters, and you can only do so many leves (about 5 in the starter area) before you have to go back to town to trade them in for more. Thankfully there's some teleportation available that should speed that up.

Almost everyone is soloing right now, so maybe the # of mobs was designed expecting more parties and not so much soloing? I jumped on one the less populous worlds - Bodhum -in the Forest city, but after doing the 1st leves a couple times I was able to move past the huge mass fighting over the 1st few sets of mobs. So, I didn't really experience that problem.

Anyways, my first impression is that it deserves some further investigating. I may need to optimize my graphics settings a little better...I love the graphics, but maybe that's part of the slowdown I'm experiencing with the GUI. My specs are not a lot better than the required specs.

If you browse to the directory your game is installed to, you'll find this program you can run to set a bunch of things like that:
