Some low level guildleve gameplay. As far as I can tell guildleve is a sort of instanced quest system where the NPcs give you access to a specific area to complete a series of quests in. You get a teleporter option to go back to the NPC when finished.

Guildleves are small, rectangular plates made of stained crystal set into a frame of precious metal, each depicting a virtuous deed of one of Eorzea's patron saints, also known as "guardians." When issuing tasks or quests, guilds will often provide adventurers with these plates, allowing their bearers "leave" to take whatever steps necessary to complete the jobs, including entry into normally restricted areas, hunting or harvesting on private lands, the confiscation of goods, even negotiations with those considered enemies of the City-States. Guildleves also grant use of aetheryte portals, ensuring quick travel about the region. Upon assessing an adventurer's skills, a guildmaster will provide a selection of several different leves, taken from the guild's stock. After weighing risks against rewards, fame against fortune, adventures may then select the leves that they feel best suit their needs. Of course, there are no regulations stating that tasks must be completed alone. Adventures are free to call on their companions to join them, as only one leve is required to take advantage of the benefits and privileges provided to its bearer. By coordinating the leves of multiple party members, adventurers can even plan grand campaigns built around several different quests. Whether you have an hour or a whole day, are alone with friends, seeking battle or bounty, guildleves give you the ability to forge your own adventures. The possibilities are endless!"

Heh, I like how the FFXIV website uses the FFIV prologue music .

Well, to be fair, it's not just FFIV; the song is "Final Fantasy" and appeared in almost all the games in some form, going all the way back to FF1 as "Opening Theme".

It was sorely lacking from XI, though, so I'm glad to see it make a return.

Is NDA lifted yet? Can we talk about it? I've only gotten on for a few of the sessions they opened up for NA.

I hope so, I would really like some in-depth impressions from people who actually played the game.

I just hope Sony doesn't pull a Champions Online where the beta game is completely different from launch.

the more vids i see the more i feel im just not going to even demo it, the combat system just looks too slow.i don't care that its a grind. but the fact that combat is not fluid and reminds me more of a FF console game then anything else is a large turnoff. Its prob because im used to WoW. and ill freely admit that wow is far from perfect but at least combat is fluid and quick

the gameplay looks boring
most of the videos just show boring go kill x quests
I'm guessing at this point no one uploading videos is at a point where they can do more interesting stuff

Bleh, if it has a turn-based battle system I'll probably not play this. I'm also used to a fluid battle system like WoW/DAOC.

how recent are the vids you're looking at? I read that they sped up combat like a patch or two ago.

This game is very early Beta, IMO it's really Alpha part 2. It has no business being called Beta. As such you can't make judgements on things like content or "grinds". There is nothing to do yet and they are just testing movement and combat systems, of course it's gonna be a grind. Also, this is a Japanese game of the final fantasy lineage, you don't expect some grinding? Remember that the predecessor to this game had death XP penalties, 2+ hours to form a party, 10,000 fish quests, 20+ hour boss fights, etc. With both FFXI and the trendsetter, WoW in mind, this game so far is a huge step up in action then FFXI ever will be. The ability to just step out and solo stuff is a huge change (which I hope lasts pasts the noobie levels). The action, attack is much faster then FFXI but still needs a lot to catch up to WoW. I've played WoW since early Alpha all the way to the current Raids and FFXI since first NA release to now. Both have their merits and IMO, different virtues. I think FFXIV is going to go after the WoW market a bit but to really see what it's going to become is anyone's guess. A lot of core game changing decisions will be made from now to release which will help dictate what audience it is for. Prejudging it now is worthless in my opnion.

dakels you are probably right that is about alpha 2 right now as far as dev goes. With that said though, its only 2 months out from release right now. How much do you really think will change in 2 months? Personally I do hope to see some significant changes in the next few updates but realistically I don't see anything major changing.

Good point Morpheus. I don't know if they can get any major changes in 2 months, but I was thinking more of quest flow, combat targeting and timing, and travel ability (warps, travel). I personally like the game engine but I think tweaking it to flow faster would be a huge improvement. Other things like quest grinding are easily remedied, also it will feel a lot better when more diverse quests are introduced and there aren't 500 people in the noob zone fighting for 100 mobs. We also have not seen what the party system will be like in any meaningful way. FFXI focused on the importance, if not requirement to party and IMO had a great party combat system for it's time. I wonder where FFXIV will be focused on.

Honestly I liked how ffxi put importance on partying. If they fixed the party system then the whole negative attitude towards party only gameplay wouldn't be as bad. There's lot they can do to fix the party system imo. In ffxi it definitely had its flaws. Putting together a party could be a nightmare. You could get absolutely screwed by having no whm at/around your level available to play on your server at the time of trying to make a party. Not just whm but any job especially tanks.

There are no 20 hour boss fights in FFXI, one LS chose to take 20 hours fighting ONE boss because they didn't know the strategy. That's on them. It also doesn't take 2 hours to form a party. 10,000 fish quest can be done in a week if you're smart, hint: you don't need to catch moat carps.

I will agree with the soloing comment though, FFXI has virtually no good soloing spots aside from BST pets.

The fight system seems to be similar to FFXIII (but slower, to be more like an MMO). WoW is in no way a fast battle system...it's just repetitive, which makes it feel fast because of Auto-attack. I've played the majority of known and many many less known MMO's and, although WoW has a good battle system, it's not nearly as fast as some out there.

As for how much changes they can do in 2 months....I used to work for EA and Sega and you'd be surprised the difference that can be done in 2 months. To put it into perspective, they have come out and said that the current beta build is only 10% of the content that will be released with the game. That and also for anyone who played Battlefield 2, a month before release, I thought the game would never pass CQC and we'd have to push back release. Turns out it went Gold and came out on time and was on top of the charts for the majority of that year (I think it got PC FPS of the year, if not PC game of the year) so expect a lot to change, especially in the last three weeks.

Remember, they have a large team working around the clock on it that has access to all the content and direct contact with the dev's. For this big of a game, I'd say the team would have to be well over the 150 people mark (might not seem like much, but working 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week, that's a lot of man hours) That's the team that will have most influence. I'm sure they have builds that won't be seen by the public (not only ones in between the ones that are released, but also ones that won't be seen by the public until release)

Oh, and the NDA won't be lifted until one of two events...either the game is released or they do an open beta (which it's not looking like at this point, although it's been rumored so much)

My setup is:
AMD Athlon II 4x 635 @ 2.9Ghz
Ati Radeon HD 4850 512
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Pro

My benchmark score was just over 3100...

Building a new computer for a friend tonight, it's a high end rig, I'll let everyone know his benchmark when we get it.

I went and downloaded the official benchmark off the site.

My setup is:
AMD X6 1055T @ 2.8GHz
4GB RAM
NV 9800GT 512MB
Win7 Pro x64

My score was about 2600 at 720, about 1400 at 1080. Looks like a video upgrade is in order.
