Just scored 5091 on my i7 in sig. Performance should be fine. When I started FF11 it ran like crap on my ti4200 lol

I started FFXI with a Radeon 9000pro which barely met minimum specs. Looks like I'll be doing the same for FFXIV with my Nvidia 9600GT.

I scored 2800 on 720p with the card overclocked, though. Should be playable until AMD get SI out.

If anyone cares, the open beta client is available to download from here:

http://www.fileplanet.com/215249/210000/fileinfo/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Beta-Launcher

Of course after you download the 6.5+ GB client from their slow ass P2P network you'll still need a way to get an actual account to login.

Also, the devs seem to be limiting the amount of progress players can make each day. Seems like once you hit your "xp limit" you have to wait about 8 hours or so real time until that certain character can continue on. They don't want people to max level too quickly or something. Maybe because they can't make content fast enough or whatever. This game sounds dead in the water to me personally..

Maybe they dont want people playing end game stuff until release? Happens a lot in MMOs, internally test end game and let the masses test leveling, balance, mechanics of stuff (creatures/instances), and quests.

No. Copied from another forum

It's threshold hours. They calculated the maximum amount of XP anyone could earn in eight straight hours of non-stop XP gain.

You have eight of these at 100%, then 7 after at a lower percentage, which resets when you're doing anything other than not getting XP. This includes running to find a new mob, going to get quest, going back to town.

So basically, if you're not in a 15 hour long massive party grind where you're getting powered through by a bunch of crazy japs, then you're never going to ever experience any experience loss at all.

This whole system was designed so that it will only take say, 280 hours of experience gain to reach the max level, spread out across maybe 4-6 months, instead of having to grind endlessly for at least 800 hours like other MMORPG's.
It's a great system if you can understand it.

I got the e-mail earlier as well, but I went to the page and it said it was delayed... or is that for being delayed until today?

Did you read either the email or the page???

The email said the beta would open up at 17:00 (what time zone???).

However, if you go to the the page, and it says it was delayed indefinitely.

I read it on my phone after I saw the e-mail... I was pretty certain it was delayed past its intended start date (today), but sometimes I can't interpret the Engrish that S-E puts out .

I can't remember when I signed up for beta but does that window that I quoted on the site drop and a log in appear when Reg codes are being handed out?

Have a guild member who got the beta, and played for maybe 2 days.

I am in a competitive online guild;a guild-mate has been playing and this is what he has to say:

Apparently the combat system is pretty dull, and expect 30 second fights even at level 1, where you barely make it out alive.

Quote:
FFXIV, on the other hand, has punishingly long fights right from the start. Once you manage to somehow target the squid mob through the grace of god (this was before I caved in and used my PS3 controller), you have one ability (let that sink in...ONE FUCKING ABILITY) that you just spam until its dead. Pretty standard, right? I mean, you're low level, who cares about having a low number of abilities. Well, I'd be right on board with that, if the fight didn't take 30 fucking seconds.

Also apparently the game just sucks to play on a PC with a mouse and keyboard. He mentions several times in his review how he wanted to pull his hair out because it was so frustrating, and that the urge to use a controller was growing rapidly.

Quote:
Ignoring the fact that you flat out can't use the mouse if you want to play unless you're okay with using it like a controller

There is much more bad about it; such as the fatigue system (oh, you will learn about that soon enough!)

And the fact that there are basically a HUGE lack of mobs in zones (only enough to sustain a few people apparently)

He's right about the control issue(mouse support is very awful) and the amount of mobs per zone. Where he is wrong is the one ability thing. I'm not even sure what lvl he is but anything about like 2 or 4 you should already start having multiple abilities.

That's how I interpret it. And to the guy that wants to go download the client tonight: good luck. I started their peer-to-peer download/install program last night around 9pm, and it had reached a little over 40% by 6am this morning on file 1/2 for the 8-30-2010 update. It'll get done, but it isn't quick.

Maybe more people will get on it today and tonight?

I'm glad there's an opportunity for the open beta test, because there's no way I'd consider this game otherwise. The latest Square Enix games I've tried do not inspire much confidence, and I'm dissapointed they used the same races from FFXI--I hope it doesn't make it feel stale to me. Maybe testing the game for the next couple of weeks will change that outlook.
