Ok, first of all, mages are beast in ffxiv. In my opinion they are so strong that they probably need to be nerfed a tad. Right now I can defeat blue/green/yellow/orange and even some red mobs. I can chain blue/green/yellows one after the other if i wanted to.

Now on to crafting. Lets get one thing out of the way. Crafting is just pure grind. Even though ffxiv is made for casuals its pretty clear crafting isn't. Sure theres people who got crafts to 10 or maybe 15 but once u get to 20 you start to see how bad it will be. Now as far as how far you can it off of npc mats. Well it seems right now around mid 20's before you run out of mats to grind off by npc's. This could all change with a jeuno style city that sells higher lvl mats or camps that do to. No one will know till release.

Now onto game economy. Believe it or not I really don't mind the retainer system. At first I hated it until i actually started selling stuff. Not having to low ball someone on AH all the time is nice. I could set my prices and my stuff would generally sell. Now could they improve the retainer system and how its used in the game? Yes, they could do a lot actually. One of my ideas is to have a space in each crafting guild where you could put retainers. So if miners want to place their retainers in the blacksmith so their mats are easier to find by smithers. The smithers could put their retainers in the gladiator guild and so on. It helps some what organize retainers in theory but of course theres probably no way to regulate it. I've heard people request a search system. The problem with that is, if you add a search system then you basically got an AH in so many ways. If you are gonna go that route then you might as well put an AH in.

Things I hope to see changed.
*Remove armor rewards for leves(right now weaving/leather/armorer are useless)
*Fix xp bug for partying.(only 2/3 of the players in party get sp after battle)
*Add a level filter for the search option on the players site.
*Equip traits by text commands.
*Increase mob respawn rate.
*More slots in the trade menu/also speed up the trade process.
*Speed up crafting/get rid of the useless windows you go through to setup a synth.
*Remove HQ mats(they are so annoying and take up lots of inventory space).
*Inventory organizing options.
*Be able to access your retainer without having to go the wards(Maybe you have a npc at camp that allows to access your retainer).
*Increase npc repair cost by a lot.
*Increase chat message length.
*Allow more UI customization.
*Limit the amount of retainers per ward and per section in each ward.
*Increase server capacity

Yep, my thaum is a beast and can solo multiple reds Just had to wait until level 12 to do so really. As far as some of your other things.

1) I don't see a problem with armor drops for quests as it is. The random items you get are luck of the draw.

2) I agree the exps for grouping needs to be fixed.

3) you can equip traits with slash command it's /equipaction <1-10> "<trait_name>". This is just like anything else. The game automatically knows that traits go in their own slot. So for example I want to equip an active spell like dia and a trait like Epiphany I would use these two slash commands if I want them in the same number spot on their own hotbars.

/equipaction 2 "Dia"
/equipaction 2 "Epiphany"

this works and puts them both on their number 2 slot of their respective hotbars

4) HQ mats are essential to crafting. They start you off with more durability and quality.

5) Never see customizing GUI options except for colors for this game and maybe window borders.

And I may be one of the only fans of FF8 >.>

8 is really good... the graphics are certainly dated by now, but the mechanics, story and everything were great. They followed up to what is likely the most loved in the series. The did a good job.

9's style I get and like, but the gameplay was shit and there was no depth. It really could have been great, but as usual the Square of late always kills a good thing.

Everyone was hyped about a FF7 remake years ago, Square teased it and didn't deliver. Why not just please your customers and make millions? Doesn't make any sense. D:

As a company I really dislike them. They've just gotten worse and worse. I doubt this shit will be any good.

Just think if they HAD remade FF7 with their current team (for the single player games)...bad bad bad.

FF14 actually seems to have a lot going for it, but we'll have to see how they continue to progress with their updates/improvements.

Some other good notes from that new info link:

*We're fully aware that inventory interface response speed needs to be improved. At the time of release, we hope to have made significant improvement, and plan to continue our work after release as well.

*[paraphrased]We're trying to fix many client side issues with guildleves, and you can now retry a failed guildleve by returning to the NPC that gave it out.

*(could be really good, depending on implementation) Adjustment of the Armoury System UI so player abilities will not reset when changing classes.

But also some clues that they really don't grasp the concept of 'causal' at all:

A character's physical level and attributes will have an effect on crafting and gathering. There are hints in the game as to what does what, so please search for it.

They try to say a player can progress as a crafter without ever having to fight monsters, but then give you a log and a chainsaw and say 'good luck!' ...But where's the on button?

People will probably figure most of it out eventually...that is, everything but for the "extra .05% chance to get a better/worse result based on your guardian and the in-game time/day/year as long as you just had a sip of tea and did a /dance emote to the frowning galka (or whatever they are now)...but it definitely won't be me. I'm not gonna rush in and throw my resources into an endevour as tedious as their crafting system just to learn that 2 points of 'mind' or 'strength' would have saved me 25% of my total time/gil investment.

Actually crafting wasn't hard to figure out. I wrote a big guide for it on my guild's forum. Can't get to it at work, but if anyone has questions about it I can probably answer them.

I don't know if this was posted already or not, but I just got the beta a few days ago and while setting up my keybinds, my character kept running the opposite way when pushed forward, and vice versa when I hit the back key.

I coudl not figure it out as I triple checked the key settings. I thought that maybe I hit some weird camera angle button where it faces the character or something.

But I think what happened is that they labeled the "forward" and "back" keybinds wrong. Anyone else notice this?

I'm still debating whether or not to keep my pre-order.. I'm just not blown away with the beta.. and I still play XI which has really picked up in what you can do, etc. At the same time, something new wouldn't hurt and the main gripes I have (interface, lag, etc.) are fixable. I do love the graphics, leve system and what someone else referred to as the "mystique" of the game.

I'm keeping my preorder, but probably won't actually load the game up for about a month. The only reason I don't just cancel and buy it later when I'm ready to play is because of the $10 credit amazon gives. So far I've loved the content in the game, but it obviously needs some time for the polish to be rubbed in. Glad I didn't go for a collectors edition now since I have no wish to play early.

Luckily in the meantime CIV V will consume my life.

1. Theres really no luck of the draw when you can cherry pick leves from 3 different cities. You can set it up so a set of 8 leves always gives you a gear reward. My first set of rank 30 leves gave me head, body, waist, and feet armor and by the second set only thing i needed was some leg armor. Can you tell me how a weaver, leatherworker, or armorer is supposed to compete with that? Then on top of that, all the extra gear people don't use from their leves they will put in their retainers. It all equals out to making those 3 jobs some what worthless and now with npc repairing to 75% its even worse. I have a guild member who leveled weaver in open beta up to 17 without making really anything at all. Finally he switched to blacksmith and has made over 5mil since then from him.

3. Note to self: Never listen to other LS members without trying it out yourself I was also told jewerly couldn't be repaired(I guess it couldn't in phase 3) but then a few days ago i saw a gs repairing some and I shook my head.

4. In theory HQ mats sound great but with what you just said. I would have to believe that you have never actually crafted with HQ mats before.

Just started up the beta last night. The game is unbearably slow.

Whats up with the buffer size option too in the config? I'm a bit confused by it.

Crysis on max settings plays 4x faster than FFXIV.

Anyone else having a problem like this?

EDIT: Then when i leave the game. I get an error saying my DirectX device was not found. I usually have to ctrl-alt-del to get out because its painfully slow.

If you set your buffer larger than "resolution" you are going to have major slow downs. This is the texture size for the screen. Setting it less than resolution makes the textures look like ass.

I pretty much get 60 FPS all the time with FFXIV though except in very heavily populated spots. Then it drops some to as low as 45 fps, but that is mostly due to net lag affecting FPS.

Also, with that error, it seems as if the game is not using your video card correctly. You may need to fix your system.

Anyone having issues connecting/starting the game?

Every time I click on the shortcut to start the game, it checks the version and gives me a fail/error message shortly after and then closes.

Is there something I need to do to get around this?

The original patcher had a bug with it. You need to download all the updates with another torrent client until you reach the one that fixes the patcher bug for beta. Just google how or look back in previous posts in this thread talking about how to do it.

I played this game a bit last night. I have to say I was impressed by the graphics. I am not usually into MMO best this was fun. I also realized this game is best played with a game pad. Luckily I have a logitech game already and it worked flawlessly and then the beta ended. Well here's hoping the CE arrives on time from Amazon.

Edit: This is an awesome release video.

Having watched a few videos of gameplay it seems that the combat is really slow and not fluid. I know it is not a turn based game but it does look like it has turn based pacing. After games like wow, aion & warhammer I am not sure I could get used to the slow method of combat. Are my perceptions off base here?

The battles do take longer but are more involved, you have to watch for triggers, time your attacks so they hit at the right position and watch your stamina. It's a lot less grindy because there's a lot more going on during combat.

In other words it's not a rinse and repeat type combat system like in EQ2 where you just perform the same set of moves on a mob wait for it to die and just move on with the next mob and do the same, the old style system can get pretty tedious for some people.

the targeting system does need work, would like to hear from anyone with CE describe what has changed.

Some things I like, some things I dont. The first few months are going to make or break this game. I want to like this game so much, but how they put out such and incomplete and untested game Ill never know.

I had to put in a 16 hour day at work yesterday so I didn't get home until late. Still, after 6 more hours of play before I crapped out I managed to get to 11 Thaum, 8 goldsmith.
