I think Final Fantasy 3/6 had some good moments, but they were a bit more somber and dramatic than 2/4's more heroic moments. However, both games had an aspect removed from their release. In 3/6, Celes no longer commits suicide if she fails to keep Cid alive. In 2/4, Palom and Porom are alive at the end. If I remember correctly, that was actually added for the American release as the Japanese release did not have them at the end, which made you assume that they were still dead/petrified. Even considering Rydia's return to the group as an adult, the Palom and Porom sacrifice scene is probably my favorite scene from the game. It's so sad when Tellah tries to cure them and it doesn't work due to them turning to stone through their own volition.

I know. The worst part about it is that P & P were so badass compared to most of the companions up to that point. And that stupid spoony bard was the worst! "I will damage you--with music streams!"

Yup. Totally worthless outside of a single boss fight.

Then the bard job gets redemption in FF5 when it's almost the only way to kill the games's hardest boss (and easily the hardest boss in Final Fantasy ever until FF7).

I never had the issue with 8 that many people did. I liked it more than 7, but less than 9.

I also enjoyed VIII.

Reading a breakdown of the ending cinematic helps highlight how ambitious it was, and I can see why it didn't get as much mainstream success because of that.

And while I can understand the gripes about the magic system, I think that's honestly just people getting wound up over nothing. I wasn't even farming fights for magic by the end-game. And the idea of a magic user having to make a sacrifice of some sort to cast a spell makes a lot of sense.

What? 5's boss was by far the hardest for me. 7's was almost trivial.

8 probably could have killed it for most people. 9 was really quite good, though, and very much like the earlier FF1-3 (1-6 or whatever) in the series, with the classic character types. It is certainly worth playing if you can play that sort of thing these days.

FWIW, I consider those type of worlds, up through FF9, to be "open world" at that time anyway: you have a world map, can pretty much go where you want when you want (Assuming you have the airship), but the story and leveling does tend to push you on a specific path. That all changed with FFX, which removed the world map and just became kinda like CoD on rails.
Agreed about FFX. It didn't really "open" up until essentially the very end of the game (just before going to the Zanarkand Ruins).

If you mean standard boss, then I tend to agree with you. If you mean hidden boss, very few things can compete with Ozma in FFIX, or many of the monster arena battles in FFX...

I never did kill Ruby, much to my shame. I did kill Emerald, though.

I was talking about the special boss not the final boss.

Ruby Weapon > Omega without bard

Just barely though. Omega is way harder than Emerald weapon or anything until FF9 though.

Wasn't Ruby the one that you cheese with Knights of the Round + Mimic?

I'm assuming that's what he's talking about. I did that with Emerald and it wasn't too bad. Best I can remember, there is more timing involved in trying that with Ruby, because it can interrupt that or easily lock down your KotR caster...or something. I forget.

With Emerald, you're basically fighting the clock while you sit through 15+ agonizing minutes of repetitive Knights of the Round spam, lol.

And I think It's KotR + 4x materia + mimic materia, right?

As I recall (and this was like 20 years ago), the combo I used involved Hades and Phoenix. I am pretty sure that Hades was key to locking it down. I'm not even sure I had KotR at that point, although it would have obviously made things go quicker. (I did have it, it definitely wasn't leveled up like I had it for Emerald. That one I did brute force, spending like an hour watching the KotR cut-sceen over and over again.)

Emerald is the one to spam with Knights. Ruby would kick your characters out of the battle. There is a way to mitigate him with materia but to me that is like beating Omega with a bard.

Yeah i used hades, and final attack and phoenix to keep people alive, and kotr to kill ruby, it was a pain, so was emerald but ruby was indeed harder.
