We called animal control - they looked up the address in their computer....they're going to drop off some paperwork so we can file an affidavit. Hopefully the dog owner will pay all the vet bills, fines, and be required to fix their fence (which they have already been warned about).

I'll keep you updated, if you so desire..

I wouldn't go that far. But a bird is worth just as much as a cat.

Last summer a cat attacked a bird nest near my yard. A bird was killed and a smalll one was left on the ground, wouldn't eat anything when I tried to feed it (too small) but good thing at least one of its parent was still around and fed it. Bastard cat :|

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. My cats are family...wild birds aren't really anybody's family - many people love wild birds (I like birds as well), but I would rather lose a wild bird than one of my cats.

If I caught a wild animal chewing up my pet, I'd shoot it full of lead that you can use it like a pencil. (thanks al)

I happen to have a kitten, and she's an indoor cat, so I don't have to worry about birds or vicious attack dogs. I have some pics, but I haven't had the time to upload them yet. Maybe this weekend.

Along the lines of this topic, I found this article last week and sent it to my girlfriend with the subject of I HATE DOGS!!

Dogs Kill Bag Of Kittens
Someone Had Abandoned Kittens Along Roadside

POSTED: 12:00 p.m. EDT May 28, 2002
UPDATED: 12:05 p.m. EDT May 28, 2002

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. -- Dogs killed five kittens after someone abandoned them along a Mount Pleasant road.

The kittens were left in Akabe Gulbankian's fenced-in yard Friday.

She never saw who did it, she said. All she heard was her two dogs making a big rush, barking, toward some evergreen trees.

Later, one of her dogs brought back a kitten in its mouth. Eventually all five kittens' bodies were found.

Countryside Humane Society Executive Director Neil Young certainly hopes there won't be many more incidents like that as cat reproduction season starts.

Hope the little feller pulls through.

Jake is a cool name for a cat, BTW.

To say cats should be on a leash is absurd.

Why is it absurd? My cat is leash trained.

We trained her with the leash as a kitten. At first she didn't like wearing the halter, but now she brings her halter and leash to the front door when she want's to go for a walk--which is like every minute of the friggin day.........

Neighbors got a kick outta seeing the cat pulling me behind her.

If I actually caught something chewing up my pet, you can bet on the fact it wouldn't live to see another sunrise. I was too late this time, though - by the time I got out there, the dog was gone, and the damage was already done. If I could've prevented the injury to our cat, I would have..

I hope the authorities will resolve this matter, and slap a crapload of fines on this guy.

I hope jake is ok. Hate that their is dogs that are not controlled. If a person ever hurts my animals i would want him or her to go to jail forever.

I don't believe the dogs are to blame. The person cruel enough to drop that bag into the fenced in yard is the villain. I would expect a similar result if someone dropped a bag of baby birds in with a bunch of cats.

A somewhat related question, if an animal wander to my yard and attacked my children, dogs, cat, bird, etc, or destroy the property, is it my given right to kill or inflict damage on it ?

If it is a threat to human life, I believe you have every right to kill it. You may want to contact your local police department and see what they say.

How do you know? How do you know he wasn't off then came running back before he got caught? You weren't out there, you didn't have him on a leash. I feel bad for ya man, I wouldn't want my cat hurt either BUT responsible cat owner do NOT let their cats wander. The average lifespan of a cat that is allowed outdoors is 5 years, the average lifespan of an indoor cat is about 16 years. When we adopted our cat from the shelter they made us watch a video about all of this stuff. Your cat can be killed by other animals, run over by cars, exposed to diseases and other horrible things if you let them out to wander.

Keep your cats inside, it's good for you and it's good for them.

Not all cats can live inside. It's not a matter of being responsible, sometimes it's just not possible to take very cat into your home. I have four cats in my house. They were all strays at one time. I have usually no less than six others living outside of my house at any given time. I make sure they have water, and I buy nutritious food for them to eat. Although they are free to roam, or even leave whenver they wish, I still call them my cats. It is just not possible for me to take every stray that comes around into my home, but I still have compassion towards them, and give them a place to stay, and good food to eat. Yes, sometimes bad things happen to them, but that's the life of a stray. If you feel that I am not being responsible then go ahead and deride me.

But I will say that I know how you feel CadetLee. I hope Jake makes it through okay, and I'm glad your other buddy turned up.

sometimes you have to protect your own, you cant expect everyone to do what they are supposed to do. When driving, do you automatically assume that no one will run a red light and side swipe you? No, you look before your cross. Consider leaving an animal outside without a fence or a leash crossing an intersection and not looking. Most of the time you wont get hit, but there is always the chance.
