Well, so I just got done drinking a couple of beers on my advisor and I am done!

Just passed my PhD dissertation defense in Ceramic Engineering. I'm off to have a couple more drinks with my wife and to hug my daughter.

ok, so I have 2-4 weeks worth of corrections to work on, but I have all my damn signatures!

Congrats! Welcome to the Ph.D. club here at ATOT

(I got my Ph.D. in chemistry in 2003).

Do you already have a job lined up? Teaching? I thought about teaching but now I'm just working in industry. Money is great but the fullfillment-factor is questionable.

I envy all of you. Question for all of you who are just getting/soon to get phd's, how old are you?

Computer Ceramics..? Is that like moding an Apple II to be used as a paperweight? Not to crap on the major you've been involved with for 11 years but I never even heard of it before.

Finished High School in 1992
Finished B.S. Chemistry 1997 (spent first year as Comp Sci major)
Finished Ph.D. Chemistry 2003 (my advisor didn't get tenure, finished last 2 years under my own direction)
Post-doc for 1 year, finished in 2004

Now gainfully employed (got job lined up during post-doc). I turned 31 years old in May.

A long path, but at least I won't be limited by my degree status; I'll only limited by my own abilities.

No offense, but there's no way in this world I'd wait until 31 to a) start my life and b) begin to pay back the insane amount of student loans you must have. Congrats, nonetheless, as you have far more patience that I.

And CONGRATS to the OP, hope it treats you well

No students loans. I worked my way through undergrad, and in grad school you get paid (combination of being a teaching assistant and being paid out of grant money). The only types of graduate programs where you pay are law school and medical school.

I would get a PhD except that in order to get one I would have to lower my standards and my IQ and buy into a bunch of Prof's crap...so...I don't think I will do that...at least not do that AND pay for it.
