Metal Gear has always been overrated. Luckily it isn't anywhere near the top of games you should check out.

As far as media server goes, I just turn my laptop on and the PS3 connects, no software needed. I tried using PS3 Media Server and it was terrible and really didn't add anything that Windows can't already do. To people that say Xbox is better, how? I honestly can't see it working any easier than selecting a playlist. It's like 2 clicks, how can Xbox do it easier?
Alright, I'm finally done ordering stuff for now. Final haul - Madden '11, both Ratchet and Clanks, Demon's Souls, one extra Dualshock 3, and one extra Move controller. Whoops, didn't mean to spend that much.

The PS3 also automatically connects to my computer, but it's useless to me since it is unable to play .mkv's that way. PS3MS adds plenty beyond .mkv transcoding, including bandwidth limiting (although I won't be using that), subtitles options, etc. And I never have any issues with it. The regular way works fine for music, obviously.

I can stream .avi files to my PS3 via TVersity without any problems, but can't steam HD .mkv files. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to fix it, but does anyone know what I need to do to be able to stream .mkv's? I have the same issue with my Xbox 360.

I'll probably pick up Gran Turismo 5 when it comes out because I like racing games (got a 360 just so I could play Forza 3 - seriously, it's the only game I bought for the system) and I finished prologue pretty fast and enjoyed it. I've tried FPS games on both consoles but can't adjust to not having keyboard + mouse and play like crap vs. how I do on the PC so I'm a little reluctant to buy Halo Reach.

I could never get it to work properly on a 360, even though PS3 Media Server also works with the 360. That's why I ended up with a PS3.

But like I said, PS3 Media Server works great for .mkv's and the PS3. The only issue is that it's going to be severely limited by wireless bandwidth if you go that route. I bought a 100' ethernet cable so I don't have to worry about it, and it streams beautifully at 25-40+ Mbps, probably higher if I had any media that was higher bitrate than that.

I tried PS3MS and my biggest gripe (after getting some bugs ironed out) was actually the terrible XMB interface. I have a ton of folders in my media sections and scrolling through them on XMB is just bad . I think I also had some weird subtitle problems with anime too.

I use a PC with XMBC instead.

I played MGS and thought it was garbage too. And I have played every game in the series. So, Ravenseal, am I just an idiot? The game was way overrated, and at times struggled to identify itself and what type of game it wanted to be.

I disagree that it was overrated. I do think the series lost its vision with MGS4 though. It seemed more about fan service than anything, so basically, you either knew what was going on and you loved every second or you had no idea where the story was and why you should be excited about what was going on.

I thought MGS4 was a masterpiece in story telling, but the gameplay was lacking. Overrated it was not in regards to the whole package, but I can see why some speak out so strongly against it.

A few good PSN games for less than $10.00 I think:

Pixeljunk Monsters, fun tower defense

Wipeout HD, zero G racer

SuperStardust HD, arcade style asteroid update,

Smash Cars

Ok, I'll try PS3 Media Server and see how it goes tonight when I get home. I have a wired gigabit network so I don't foresee any bandwidth problems.

Edit: tried out PS3 Media Server last night, and it's awesome! It played my .mkv files, raw data blu-ray rips from my blu-ray collection which are huge file sizes that I haven't had a chance to process yet, and dvd iso files from my dvd collection.

just a word of warning about PS3MS do some googleing if you have a super fast comp like a I7 8xx or similar you are going to have to force limit the buffer on it or you will overload the program and crash it

Hm, I have an i7 and I set the buffer to max and haven't had any issues yet.

What should it be limited to?

they may have fixed it but it was an issue where you could throw too much data at the buffer and it couldn't clear fast enough causing a crash
i haven't changed my settings in forever
