every time I see you post bro I think of the movie airplane lol

characters name was stryker for the dora crowd.

Hahaha, I hadn't thought about that movie in forever, good one! It came up for me because I played that position in soccer years ago, and was feeling marginally un-creative when it came to picking a username. I like your reference better, and may commandeer it in the future.

I'm trying to arrange a test drive of the ST, one of the finance guys at Madison Ford is a old friend of mine and they have a blue one. If I can pull it off, i'll shoot some admittedly bad video for you guys.

I'll take slightly bad honest video over flashy marking crap everyday. I really would like a real world opnion on the ST. I'm much a fan of the car.

Well, every other MS3 owner, myself included, is noting considerably better gas mileage than you. It could just be your driving style though.

Not according to this thread.

Driving style should not matter on the interstate with cruise control.

Either way though, I've revisited the topic on several occasions because there are a lot of people who claim to get 30mpg with their ms3s, but then there are at least an equal amount of people who can't break 24-25mpg with theirs. I think some just run more rich than others for whatever reason. I blame the ECU.

I've done a lot of troubleshooting but have never been able to find anything physically wrong. No CELs and even paid the dealership to flash the ECU with the latest firmware and no difference in mileage.

I did used to get a lot worse mpg around town (14-15) until I changed out my spark plugs though.

Have you changed the air filter? Do you run 93 octane? Ever seafoam'd the intake or fuel? Are you burning a lot of oil through the PCV system? Tried cleaning the MAF? Cruise at 85mph? Just some thoughts.

Maybe the super-hot weather in FL is just a killer.

I've changed the air filter and seafoamed the intake, put fuel injector cleaner in the gas and cleaned the MAF. Also replaced the O2 sensors. Don't think I am burning any oil. I cruise at 75mph.

I might try using 0w30 next oil change instead of 5w30. Dunno if worth the extra cost.

Also, I've tried messing with different octanes but there is no difference in mileage between 87, 89, or 93 octane (just decreased performance). I did find that curious though as the ECU is supposed to run more rich with 87 than 93. Seems like it runs just as rich with 93 as it does with 87.

Just a question to who ever.. But would having a tuned ECU for your after market exhaust (say a cat back) affect mpg a lot? What about cold air intake, etc?

Jw because this guy says he has flashed his ECU to the latest firmware.. but he never said if he had any after market parts (At least, I don't remember reading he did)?

My CAI improved fuel economy, after I could keep the right foot from having too much fun.

Yeah well that only makes sense...Hmm.. kind of odd there aren't consistant results. You'd suspect once you get an ECU flash, it would fix any software problems (maybe mazda ECU 1.2 was written to burn more rich by mistake and the flash to 1.2.1 fixes it). Some kind of mazda QA problem?? :-/

Possible I suppose, but I'm not sure. I'm fairly religious about using engine braking (and thus decel fuel cut) wherever possible, and I get 93 whenever I can because I've noticed fuel economy improvements with 93 over 91. Nothing less than premium should be run in the MS3 though... Shawn: putting 87 in the tank was a bad idea.

Seems like every MS3 owner in ATG gets 30+ on the interstate except for Shawn. Tires, tire pressure, and speed limits might have something to do with it? I don't know. Could have an intake leak...

Also.. maybe he has some cargo in there? Carrying people, plus some cargo and random crap can add 200-300 lbs and you don't even realize it. Or he himself just weighs 300lbs.. lol jk
