Definitely a great game:
-pretty good story (almost like a movie)
-great graphics (much better than what I thought it would be...especially the cutscenes)
-good controls

I'm glad I got a PS3...hopefully there will be more great games to come.

So tell me...did you sit through and watch ~90 minute or so cutscenes at the end after you beat the game?

Why? WHY? You're asking me WHY?!?!?

So you really liked the game. That's all.

I didn't particularly feel like watching the ending but I did watch all of the other cutscenes in the game.

Lol yeah I watched it all....it was a pretty good game...better than most I've played recently and I'll definitely pick up any more MGS games they have (I've never played any of the previous ones). I didn't even know there was gonna be another cutscene...I thought it was over the first time they showed Snake at the graveyard. I like watching movies...maybe that's why I stuck through it.

I beat this over this past weekend as well. Great game  Looking forward to more playthroughs to try and get some of the other unlockables, emblems, easter eggs, etc.

There are so many great moments in this game. I thought the sequence at the end of Act 4 was pretty amazing. I also enjoyed the 'final battle' at the end of Act 5.

I watched all the cutscenes. However I wish I didn't watch the cutscene during the credits.

MGS4 is a bunch of cutscenes stitched together with small moments of gameplay. There were two or three highlights.

Hardly, there were many highlights especially if you've been playing since the original MGS (or even way back to MG).

That's typically how MGS games have been since the first one for PSX. Has anyone here played metal gear for NES? I havent, but I bet it had little 8bit cutscenes too.

Personally I dig the cutscenes, but I admit that I usually play through the games a second time, skipping all the cutscenes/story.

The gameplay holds up on its own.

Not hardly. There are only 2-3 highlights in MGS4; the fight at the end, Act IV for the reminiscing factor and the battle between REX and RAY at the end of Act IV. There is so much unnecessary storytelling in MGS4, mostly the Drebin stuff. Think about Act V; how much gameplay is really in that level versus storytelling?

Hmm, after hearing negative comments regarding the quantity and length of cutscenes on several forums besides this one I am on the fence about buying this, even though it looks good in youtube clips and I enjoyed the last metal gear game.

Why? Its a damn awesome game. Skip the cutscnees if you want to, but the cutscenes are great.

I thought that you could only fast forward them. I've been skipping intro and cinematic cutscenes regularly for at least the last decade, I have some serious attention span issues.

If you're not going to watch the cutscenes, then you might as well just stay away. MGS4 is much more about story and the movie-quality cutscenes than it is gameplay. After I finished the game, the actual gameplay segments seemed like an afterthought to the story. It's like Kojima wanted to tell this huge story, but it'd take a 10-hour movie to do what he wanted. So he made it, only disguised it as a videogame, because nobody will sit through a movie that long.

For me, my playthrough was about 70% cutscenes, 30% gameplay.

Metal Gear games have always had long cut scenes and are great story telling games. If you don't like that than this game is not for you. It's my game of the year.

That's about right. As I said in the official thread:

1st play through on Normal watching everything: just under 24 hours

2nd play-through on Easy skipping everything (cutscenes/CODEC calls): 3 hrs, 46 mins

I getting close to beating it, but I'm getting hammered at the Vamp fight. IS there any reason you can buy all these guns and ammo at any time from Drebin's store, but useful things like rations and other dealing type items are not available? I only have one ration and I keep getting quickly killed...

*Spoliers, obviously*

What difficulty are you playing on? I found that jumping away from him works well to avoid his attacks, I didn't have much trouble with him but I was playing on Liquid Normal. I used the anesthetic sniper rifle to head shot him, which drained all of his psyche, then when he got up I CQC-grabbed him and used the syringe on him. I imagine a headshot with any of the other sniper rifles (and possibly other weapons) would have a similar effect.

I'm actually playing on the step above the easiest...I think Liquid Normal. I've killed him twice with the rocket launcher, but now that I did some online research I'm finding that I need to use the syringe. It's weird, most have said Otacon tells you that, but all he tells me his that he doesn't know what to do. After I kill him the second time he's like...HE'S not dying!!! What can we do???".

Shouldn't there have been something telling you that you need to use the syringe? Not only that, but I'm not even sure it's an item in my inventory??

It should be in your inventory; Naomi gives it to you when you "rescue" her from her lab. You will probably have to go into the Start menu and add it to your selectable inventory from the Items section. Otacon never told me about it either, I had downed Vamp a couple times until I found out about the syringe. Maybe he does eventually, or maybe you have to call him on the Codec? I got impatient and looked it up.

I've only played through it once but I loved it. I thought the ending was great(gameplay part) and I watched all of the cutscenes.

IIRC (played this game on release and not since), Otacon does eventually tell you about it, just takes him awhile. This fight pissed me off until I finally found out what to do.
