What? Sub-standard wages. Ory-gun gas pumpers get paid pretty well...(depending on the station, of course) State minimum wage (as of July 1st) is $11.25/ hr, $12.50 In the Portland metropolitan area. Most gas station attendants I've talked with get between $15-$20/hr...and gas prices are still cheaper than self-serve gas prices in WA.

In NJ the minimum wage went to $15 an hour. Many of the gas retailers in NJ got together and had stated that they'll go self serve because $15 an hour is just too much. Figure, many full serve gas, stations have at least 6 gas attendants. That can get very expensive. $15 ain't that much money in Jersey. In my area, rent is $1k a month. I live in a resort town so many places cut back very quickly. If you get 32 hours you're fortunate. You definitely ain't going to raise a family on $15 an hour. That's for sure.

One problem is that gas in this country is preposterously, disastrously cheep compared to the rest of the developed world. And yet we still pay a tax on it, even though it is pretty heavily subsidized, no?

I'm not sure what margins these places earn on gas, but I get the impression it's incredibly low anyway, right? like something in the 5% range? I think stations depend on the junk they sell in their stores, assuming they don't also have a service garage, to pay their bills.

Friends own one. Gas is not a money maker and some times a loser. Small tanks are 10K gallons+ . Buy that at .05c too much a few times.
