So I got home yesterday and I had a little suprise (well, not quite so little after all) waiting for me at the door. My cube server that I had been contemplating for a month or so and finally ordered.
So yea, it's big and heavy...at least more so than the case that came with my Micron computer two years ago (a rebadged Palo Alto case, NOT the PA810 tho). Anyway, holds 7 hdds in the back with two 80mm fans for exhaust there. I just started moving my components over and haven't gotten around to the hard drives yet, but wow...I can use my 15GB 75GXP as my boot drive and get a few 100GB maxtors for storage and keep my 75GB 75GXP for apps. Total storage at around 600GB!! Now if I can only find a controller that can handle 8 drives and doesn't cost much I'd be in paradise.
Basically this'll be my setup:
12x DVD as prim master
52x CDROM as prim slave
16x10x40 Yamaha (I know I got a lemon but it's not TOO bad) as secondary master
250MB Zip as secondary slave
I've also got an ATA66 hdd controller, so I'll be using that as well:
15GB 75GXP as channel 1 master
75GB 75GXP as channel 1 slave
60GB 75GXP as channel 2 master
That's it for now, so I can take another hdd without changing anything. Beyond that, I'll either have to get another controller or buy a motherboard with onboard RAID (probably the latter since I'm planning an upgrade eventually anyway). But does anyone know of a controller that can support say 6 or 8 drives that DOESN'T do exotic RAID options like RAID 5 or 51 or some crazy stuff like that (read: CHEAP)??!! Escalade would be nice but it's kinda pricey...I guess I may not have much of a choice it I need that kind of drive capacity.
The only complaint I've got with this cube server is the fact that it has so many screws and is not toolless at all. Not too bad since after everything's set up I won't be messing with it much, but I do occasionally like opening the sides for fun.
Also, does anyone know of a kit I can get to change the sides to be completely transparent? I'm not talking about a window, but something like plexiglass sidepanels or something like that...I figure they don't exist but it would be cool if I could pull something off like that! Just swap the panels with transparent ones...it would be even cooler if YeongYang had built a completely transparent interior as well, but I guess that would just destroy any cooling inherent in the case already.
Can ya tell I'm happy with it?? Damn I gotta get home and throw the rest of the components in there!!!
