Finally held a counterfiet $20....

I know the owner of a small privately owned convenienced store near my house. I went in to buy a $20 scratchoff lottery ticket and 'won' back my $20.

Going into the drawer to get my money, he thought it would be a good occasion to show me a counterfiet $20 some 13-14ish year old boy passed. I picked it up by the edges to examine it and couldnt believe the amount of detail in it. It had the gold foil small 20s on the back and larger on the front and everything, but the colors were runny (water somehow got on the edge), the green and peach didnt blend very smoothly, no security strip, no watermark. Of course if you are in a hurry (like he was) you probably dont always check everything with 'the pen'. He took $40 of the crap!

The police were notified and I think these usually get referred to the secret service. I only held the edges, but I realized later I didnt want my prints on that!

Too freaky!

I handled a counterfeit 20 yesterday at work. Typically they are much better than the one I saw, because the employee that accepted it must have a been a huge moron. Not only was it completely off-center, but white space showed on the back, and the front. There was not a security strip, nor were the colors that great.

You can't be serious. You think having your prints on it will get you in trouble?

ive seen really good counterfeits with security stripe. good way to tell if it's counterfeit is to tear a small piece where the stripe is. if the stripe doesnt tear, then it's real. if it does, fake.

I have never seen a good counterfeit bill.... Some of the stories I have heard though, makes me wonder how much $$$ someone has to have invested to make some.. And then how long it takes until ROI

Just paranoid I guess. Do you know how much it costs to hire a lawyer these days? Its usually $2500-$5000 to start for board certified attorneys, depending on the degree of the charges. Denfense for murder charges starts at $50,000. Capital murder at least six figures. In both instances you might have to hire professional witnesses to testify on your behalf at $500 an hour.

Thanks, but Id rather spend my money and time on something else.

I've worked in banks that distribute money for the fedral reserve.
We had samples of counterfit bills that thye held as a teachign tool so people could learn how some counterfit bills look.
Honestly, they were extremely detailed, but I can't imagine they would fool anyone. The hardest thing to fake is the paper. You can tell a counterfit bill by feel easily, unless someone has gotten the paper correct. This is possible for one by bleaching $1 bills.

you would not go to jail if your print is on the bill. You can even buy something with it and if you get caught say you was unaware and you would be ok.

Presumably there would be a security cam that would back you up as well (although maybe not, if it's a small privately owned convenience store as stated).

But how would they know unless you were detained and questioned later? Im sure most people who are in the act of passing it on purpose and happen to get caught will also proclaim their innocence to high heaven.

Most cashiers dont know you from Joe Blow and both get held and questioned by authorities IMO.

Realistically Im not really worried, but I dont want my fingertips on file somewhere - you know what I mean?

the counterfit pens test for the bleach in the paper. the rest is up to the person to visually see if the bill is counterfeit.

The easiest way to test for a counterfeit is still the ink-color test. On the bottom right there is a large color bold print of the amount of the bill. If you look at it from different angles, it should appear black and/or green. If its only 1 color, call the federalis!

The pens test for starch, not bleach. Just use any unstarched paper for your fake bills and the pens won't work.

No the pen contains iodine and it tests for starch. Bills are all cotton. Paper will test positive with the pen.

I've always wondered, why don't counterfitters make 5s or smaller denominations? It would be lot easier to pass around and noone would remeber who it was - you'll get lot more 5s than 20s. Paying for small stuff with big money usually arouses suspicion...

Because it's still easy to pass 20's, and you get legitimate money back with your change.

Time and risk. You increase both with the smaller denominations.

The bills are a proprietary linen/cotton blend...they are manufactured by ONE company in the US, exclusively for the US government (duh).

In college I once had several hundred dollars worth of counterfiet cash b/c of a friend of a friend. I had no intentions of using it but then it dawned on me how I could "clean" it. It took like a week and consisted of going to house/frat parties and passing off the fakes for $3-5 cups and change! Made some decent cash for doing nothing and never heard anything about it.

The point is the pen contains iodine and tests for starch.

The Iraqi Dinar also uses the proper blend of textile sources, and it is cheaper than $1 bills. Of course Dinars have ghost watermarks of horses on them, so if they check that you're kinda hosed.
