Finally ordered an e8400, hoping for E0.

I just couldn't take it anymore. The urge to replace my E2180 finally overcame me today and I just bit the bullet and ordered an E8400 from newegg. After watching that amazing $80 E7200 deal slip through my fingers the other day, I just couldn't help myself.

I've chimed in on dozens of threads in recent weeks about how I'm interested in the E5200, the E7200/E7300, etc. I can imagine it got tedious seeing me repeat myself all the time.

So anyone order an E8400 from Newegg recently? Anyone care to guess what my chances are at getting an E0?

So in theory this new chip at stock will beat my OC'd E2180, eh? A "modest" overclock of 3.6 ghz would destroy it. I'm pretty excited to watch my encoding times drop.

Oh, I should mention. I also ordered this to go along with the new CPU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814125238

Looks like I gave my system a serious shot in the arm. Anyone make a similar jump recently?

Final question - anyone want to buy a reliable E2180? How much does one of these puppies go for on the open market?

What are your temps like at 4Ghz with AC Freezer7?

Just tried mine at 4Ghz (445x9) works ok, but temp hit 78c in Orthos before I shut it down (retail box HSF). It didn't error or crash though, but that's way too hot for my taste.

that's dangerous. heheheh Nice attempt though.

SpeedFan 4.35

Orthos ran for about 1 minute, I was watching it carefully and when it hit 78c I clicked STOP.

(Then rebooted and reset it to 3.2ghz)

heh heh , for encoding you are much better off spending a few extra bucks for
a q6600.

78C? Bah, 78C core temps are nothing. Try 91C, that's as high as I let mine run. The chips can handle 78C.

Well, I game more than I encode. I just rip DVDs to XviD and it's pretty fast on the E2180 as it is. I'm just excited to see the difference with the E8400 over the 2180. The E8400 appeals to me because it's a great chip for gaming, general use and it will give me a nice bump in encoding speeds. The big plus is that it's 45nm and lower voltage than the E2180 and the quads.

If I did more encoding, I'd probably have gotten the Q6600, but I wanted the 45nm stuff.
According to UPS, I'll have the chip in my hands tomorrow. I won't be able to pop it into my system until Tuesday (Mondays are crazy busy for me and I have back to back meetings at night this week, ugh.)

I ordered the E8400 Asus P5Q Pro combo last week, and indeed received a E0 stepping chip.

Running with an Arctic Freezer Pro 7, I was at 35 idle, 55 load (78 degrees ambient). I tried a simple overclock to 400 x 9. This increased my temps about 6-7 degrees on both idle and load. I didn't want to try 4.0ghz yet. I didn't think I was getting enough airflow in my case, so I just ordered the Antec twelve hundred (wind tunnel) from Newegg yesterday. I'm hoping to reduce the temps by 6-8 degrees.

I hate the upgrade bug. This all started with Best Buy having the 4850 on sale last week.

this may not quite be a similar jump to yours, but since u asked, i went from a socket 939 Opteron 2.6 ghz and lanparty nF4 bord, onto a 750i FTW and q6600 running 3 ghz on Tuniq tower.

i noticed almost no difference in gaming from my old setup to my new one. except the gtx260 is the only thing that helped.

and overlal system performance in multi tasking and normal use is a bit nicer.

Nerp, I just built a new PC for my brother last week, and picked the E8400 for it. Not to scare you, but I live in NJ and Newegg shipped me a C0 with a pack date of 6/4/08 and batch Q816 from their NJ warehouse. I believe the E0s are shipping from the CA warehouse.

Anyway, the VID was 1.225 on this chip. I chose an EP35-DS3L board (flashed to F5 bios from F4) and Xigmatek HDT-SD964 cooler with TR bolt-thru kit. Ram is 2x2gb GSkill PC2-6400 GBPQ running 1:1 @ 1.8v. Default MCH and all other volts.

Since this PC wasn't for me, I was not going to push it too hard. Cliffs: 3.6ghz @ 1.25625v, 37C idle, 59C load in a 78F room -- not too bad. SuperPi 1M @ 13.1 secs. The vdroop on this board sucks at 0.05625 so CPUZ shows 1.20v under load.

21 hrs Prime95, and 1hr OCCT stable. The chip seemed to have lots of room left and I feel 4ghz would have been doable. But damn, it's so fast at 3.6ghz there's really no reason to go to 4ghz unless you have a very powerful SLI setup or something like a GTX280 or 4870X2.

Enjoy!

It shipped from NJ. C0. No E0. Threw it in during a lunch break today. Had it at 3.6 passing OCCT 30 minutes with cpuz reported vcore of 1.21 under load after a rushed OC during the two hours I was playing with it. Failed prime quickly at stock volts, had to nudge vcore up two bumps in the BIOS. Temps were at 48C under intel burntest load, 45C prime small FFT. I'll do 50 passess of linpack/intel burn and then blend overnight and see what happens.

Slightly dissapointed that I didn't get an E0, but I wasn't banking on it. This is still a great chip and with temps this good I could probably poke 4ghz with some fiddling. I literally had only about two hours to play with it today so I don't know if I could go any higher since I didn't try. I should know by tomorrow if the current arrangement is stable and then I'll start raising the FSB a bit.

** Cooling is with Tuniq 120

Yep...the E0 I received was from the CA warehouse. Too back the Eastern folks are still being shipped C0 chips.

I'll also add that what I came to realize while OCing and testing my brother's PC was that my own little E2180 is more than sufficient at 3.2ghz to not bottleneck the current generation of midrange vid cards at reasonable resolutions. Despite the raw speed of the E8400 at 3.6ghz, it would definitely be overkill for my gaming needs (still using a 19" CRT @ 12 x 10)

Like you Nerp, I also missed out on the Fry's $80 E7200. I believe that's the one to own in terms of price/performance.

Agree. Couldn't be happier with this chip and what I've got out of it.

Hmm. At just 1.21v it handles 3.6g with ease. 50 passes of intel burn overnight and it was flawless. Going to knock it up to 3.8ghz and see what happens tonight.

Hey, anyone know how far my G.Skill DDR2-800 can go? They're rated at 5-5-5-15 1.8v. I'd rather not bump their voltage. But, ideally, I'd like to push them to DDR-900 for 4050ghz on the CPU. Think I'm pushing it at that point? I'd really rather not swap it out for DDR2-1066.

Well for one nerp, I have the same ram and I have it up to DDR2-890 for 4005 GHz with 1.8v and it's fine.

I wouldn't be concerned. The IP35-E vDIMM adjustments are in 0.05v increments to 2.1v and then 0.1v thereafter. Even if you have to bump it, you could do 1.85v and that should be sufficient. The sticker on the GBPQs says 1.8v-1.9v so warranty should be good to at least 1.9v which you won't need for 450 FSB.
