I've been considering rooting and upgrading mine as well, but have been holding back because I've never modded a phone before and really don't want to brick it.

I like the phone generally, but the bloatware pisses me off given the low built-in memory on this thing. I don't really have a whole lot installed but I'm always getting the low space warning because of the preinstalled crapware. Figure I can get an upgrade and clear out some crap all at once.

Not gonna overclock, I prefer battery life to balls out speed. Everything working for you so far though? Which package did you install?

My Optimus V is running stock. Haven't had the time yet to properly research how to root it. And I'm not going to just half-ass it and end up with a $100 brick.

Meh, I don't think it's worth it to root it. It comes with the stock Android 2.2 (Froyo) ROM.

There is a automated root process for that phone, it is super easy. Just download the file, run the .exe follow the directions and your phone will be fully rooted with clockwork mod on it. I had a optimus v shortly after they came out. That phone was a straight up piece on the stock rom. I ended up putting cm7 on it, overclocked it to 800mhz and it made a huge difference in the feel of the phone

Well it look's like i fibbed a little. You have to root first then run the .exe file. I will post a link to both right now for you.

Root info just scroll down it's the first post with instructions and has your actual download link. Install the newest one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

This is the link to the .exe that installs your clockwork mod so you have recovery, you will see my name in the thread as being the second user to post. It worked 100% for me and on 3 other optimus V phones
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...3-1-ex-recoveryflasher-tons-new-features.html
Just follow the instructions, very easy to use

You have to register at that site to DL the .exe file, if you dont want to register there just pm me your email addy I will DL it and send it to you via email. This is the least I can do since I have got alot of help from people here.

Awesome, thanks! I'm gonna have to do that, as soon as I get a little time to spare

From what i read this is how to do it as shown here

1. Turn on USB Debugging (Settings - Applications - Development)
2. Copy the GingerBreak.apk to a /sdcard dir, then using a 'file manager' app (search for one in Android Market) install it like a regular app.
3. It can take up to 10 minutes, and will reboot automatically when complete (rooted), if attempt fails, reboot manually & run it again.
4. Download and copy the recovery image VM670NH_recovery.img (works with new & old OV screens) onto your /sdcard.
5. Install the Flash Image GUI app (save the .apk to a /sdcard directory, then open it with file manager). Run the app & select 'Recovery Image' option with the file above.
6. Copy the unextracted ROM .zip that you wish to install to the /sdcard dir. Also if installing a CyanogenMod Gingerbread ROM, the unextracted gapps.zip also needs to be placed in the same dir to flash right after the ROM .zip.
7. Boot into Clockworkmod recovery mode (From powered off state, hold vol-down, home, and power button until the LG logo appears).
8. FIRST, BACKUP ORIGINAL ROM! Don't continue until this is successful. Use vol-up/down, camera, & back keys to navigate in recovery.
9. Wipe Data/Factory Reset, wipe cache partition. Under Advanced submenu, wipe dalvik-cache. Then uner Mounts & Storage submenu, format all partitions EXCEPT /sdcard.
10. Install the custom ROM.zip from sdcard and gapps.zip too if going to a CyanogenMod ROM
11. Reboot and enjoy the new ROM, the first boot takes longer than usual, also some problems may disappear after rebooting

Is this the right way to install Gingerbread of the LG Optimus V ?

The info i posted is what I used to do the phone back when I had it and it worked fine the first time I never had any issues with it at all. The phone feels totally different after a overclock and a slimmed down rom. It is like a whole new phone honestly

Installed GingerBreak APK, but my phone was still stuck at Android v.2.2.1, not allowing me to move all my apps to the SD card.

Took a chance and installed CyanogenMod 7 ROM via the Clockworkmod recovery mode console. Now running Android version 2.3.7 with full root access and ability to move all my apps to the SD card and without running out of free internal memory fast.

Make sure you have a 16gb micro-sd card or bigger and a way to read these cards on your p.c.

It feels like a brand new phone and LauncherPro by Federico Carnales makes the apps super fast. You can reinstall the default apps below from Market if needed, personally, i don't want them.

If anyone wants, i'll try to write up a simplified guide to do this. I had to look at multiple forums until i got all the right info.

I found that Widgets can't be made from the SD card, only shortcut icons. There was some comment about making symbolic links to get around this, still working on that.

List of Bloatware on the LG Optimus V

Ooh, I want I want! I would love a guide. I didn't really mind too much about having a slower phone, but now my Optimus just locks up for no apparent reason, randomly. Sometimes it unlocks, and sometimes it remains frozen. Uggggh I hate it

THIS WILL WORK ON THE LG OPTIMUS V ONLY, DO NOT ATTEMPT ON ANY OTHER PHONES. READ EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE PROCEEDING. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY AS WELL. YOU MUST FLASH PHONE BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FIRMWARE IF YOU ARE TO SEND IT IN FOR REPAIR/REPLACEMENT, SEE STEP #5.

Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM for LG Optimus V

1. You will need a MicroSD with 8GB or more free
2. Do not ever use the Android Settings 'Factory Reset' from here on.
3. There is very little chance of actually bricking the phone, i messed up several times and it still worked.
4. The LG Optimus V comes with 179 Mb of actual internal ram (Settings->Storage), anything below 20Mb will cause the phone to lock up, etc. The default firmware does NOT allow many apps to be moved to the SDCard.
5. If you ever need to sell the phone, this tutorial will help you restore it back to the original firmware
6. To enter the recovery console, press power button+volume up and home button at same time for 3 seconds and let go. Use volume up/down to move about the menu and camera key button to enter sub menu's. See manual if your not sure.
7. LG Optimus V PDF Manual
8. After upgrading to CM7, I highly recommend installing from Android market:
....App 2 SD (move app to SD) by Sam Lu
....Battery Indicator by Darshan Computing, LLC
....Root Browser Lite by JRummy16
....LauncherPro by Federico Carnales
....3G Watchdog by Richard Gruet
....handyCalc Calculator by mmin
....Minutes Checker: Virgin Mobile by Jay Goel
....MX Video Player and Codec by MX Technologies
....ROM Manager by ClockworkMod
....Beautiful Widgets and BW Animation Package LevelUp Studio - costs $2.89, well worth it.
....Root Toolbox PRO by Lukemovement - costs $2.37, well worth it.
9. Any app that uses a widget, do not install on the SD card. This will save a lot of headaches later on. If you don't care about widgets, ignore this step.
10. Entire process should not take more than an hour. Make sure your contacts are backed up with Gmail. All text messages and gps contacts will be lost, sorry. Write down any apps that require passwords if you don't have them already. Make a quick list of apps installed so you can put them back on later.
11. The default Virgin Mobile apps will have to be manually reinstalled if you want them again:
...Activate (aka SSA in Settings>Applications>Manage Applications)
...airG Chat (not really an app, just a URL shortcut)
...Downloads
...My Account (not really an app, just a URL shortcut)
...Poynt
...SCVNGR
...Twidroyd
...Virgin Mobile Live
...Where
12. Stock Firmware: v2.21, CM7 Firmware: v2.37
13. After step #5 below, your phone will have root access but still be version 2.21 and you will not be able to move apps to the SD card until steps 6-10 are completed.
.
.
.
.

Follow steps 1-5 to install GingerBreak APK to give your phone root access.
----Install Root Browser Lite by JRummy16 FIRST.
----Put GingerBreak.apk , VM670NH_recovery.img and Flash Image GUI app on the sd card in a folder called "download"
.
---then---
.
Follow steps 6-10 to install CyanogenMod 7 to give your phone custom rom access and the ability to put all apps on the sd card, freeing up valuable internal ram.
----Put gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip and BACKside-IHO-VM670-02122012.zip on the sd card ahead of time in a folder called "download"
----Download 67mb: BACKside-IHO-VM670-03062012.zip
----Download 6.2Mb:gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip

all gbapps here

I have installed 35 apps and games and have 110Mb internal ram free. Good luck. Reply to this post if you run into trouble.

This is my phone with Beautiful Widgets and CM7

That bloatware list isn't too bad, compared to new phones like the Droid 4. Here's the Bloat list from the D4, btw.
