i would have to say take it bro, except that the fact that no medical insurance kinda sucks . I just landed my job 3 weeks ago doing software engineering in maryland, w/a BS in Computer Science, and it too was a little below what I was looking for. However, when I consider the other benefits, such as the holiday schedule (we get the week off between xmas and new years off, as well as 2 weeks paid vacation), the insurance, the 2 bonuses (one is 1.5% and one is profit sharing, atleast 6%, last year was 14%), and the flexibility, it didnt make me think twice. Not to mention the experience on my resume will be awesome, and it honestly is in the direction I would like my career to go as well. Right now I'm doing CAD development for a middle sized CAD program, and I would like to eventually work with special effects in movies, or possibly at a company like Pixar. And I know most of those places use about 90% of inhouse designed programs, so this CAD experience right now is perfect.

it took me about 2 months to find a job, as I graduated in May and start looking in about July, and yes this is in 04. I was looking for atleast $50K, but I landed 45K. i shouldn't even say "BUT" however since considering my benefits and what not, it will amount to over $50k/yr, and I have asthma so I get an inhaler about once a month so the medical insurance saves me some $$$. And when I told them that I was looking for $50k/yr I told them I had done research and that was the lower side of the average starting salary in my field in this area, and he was glad to see i did my research. he then told me that w/bonuses it will most likely accumulate to that, so its all good.

and right now i can't be happier. the people here are great, and everyone always checks in to make sure everything is going well and what not. i say take it

Isn't that too high of a jump though?

I got my BSEE last month. I'm still looking for a job. Of the 20-30 applications I sent out, I only got one response. I got to the final interview, and they said that the offer would probably be $40K. The average BSEE salary where I live (and would work) is $55K. Even though I didn't get the job, I probably would have tried to get $45K before I signed.

Check monster.com for adjusted salary info.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the career advice my school gives says that most companies expect that you will negotiate for a higher salary.

Well guys, thanks for all the advise, but.....

I received a call this morning from the employer that I was originally hoping to hear from, and was offered a position for them starting at $52k/year. The timing of this couldn't have been better as I had not informed the other company of my decision of their offer.

So basically, yesterday I was offered $37k at a small consulting firm here in Evansville and today I was offered $52k at a LARGE company in Evansville (lets just say they are known for applicances including refrigerators). And earning that money here in Indiana, means that I will be doing VERY well for now

Ask for like $22-$23 an hour if you get shot down you can still take the job. In the long run experience will be more important I would think.

Cool. Definitely not worth getting out of bed for $37K with no benefits. Hell, I can barely motivate myself to get out of bed for twice as much with benefits.
Grad students can make that much here in CA if you account for subsidized housing, healthcare, etc, so If I got that first offer, I would just apply to grad school instead.

lets put it this way, when i finished school with my B.S I got offered 15/ hour in Cali... the best I could find..

so 37k/year in EVANSVILLE is a steal...

your forst job should always be for experience...don't expect to make a killing...it doesn;t work that way unless you are IVY League.
