It costs about the same as a Civic EX. The only "issue" is that it's an economy car and will be lacking in some of the bells, whistles and refinements you find in higher end cars.

Otherwise, it won't have any more issues than any other Toyota.

(1) Only three factory options (side airbags, automatic transmission, color choice). Keeps production variation low. All other options are applied at port or at the dealership
(2) Uses an existing chassis (Avensis) and existing engine/tranny (Camry, Highlander, Solara, RAV4)
(3) Toyota plans on making money on TRD options. The average Scion buyer is spending $1,100 on accessories. The average Toyota buyer spends $300

a civic ex with no options, right? this is 16k with lots included, or am I wrong?

what bells and whistles are missing from this car that a $26k solara has (isn't that how much they are?)? That's $10k worth of options

FYI: I'm not arguing, I'm just curious.

Exactly. Given the target market, I think this is a given. The IS300...just not worth it IMO. The interior and exterior doesn't scream "young professional" to me like a BMW 3-series. The ride quality is harsh on highways, wind and tire noise is high, engine power and gas mileage are weak compared to BMW's I6, and the manual is arguably the worst I've driven.

If its got the same 5-speed as my parents' camry then I completely agree. What a POS shifter. Shifters on arcade machines are more precise.

A Camry with a 5-speed? Hahaha. That's like taking a picture of Rueben Studdard holding a can of V8

A Civic EX has all the options by virtue of it being an EX - that's A/C, power locks, power windows, AM/FM/CD, Sunroof, VTEC engine, alloy wheels, etc.

The Solara, for one thing, is much bigger and has an available V6...

My parents hate auto trannys. Every car they've owned in the last 20+ years has/had a manual. Its hard to imagine how lethargic that car would be with an auto; its bad enough with a manual.

Civic has 127 HP. tC has 160 and a sh!t load more torque (114 vs 163)
Civic has rear drums. tC has 4-wheel discs
Civic has 15" wheels. tC has 17" wheels
tC has a longer wheelbase and a roomier back seat with reclining seats that have 10 positions
tC has hatchback verstatility with fold flat rear seats and a folding flat front passenger seat
tC has a 160 watt radio/CD that is MP3 capable
tC has a full-length sunroof
The interior of the Civic EX is nothing to write home about

tC MSRP is $16,465
Civic EX Coupe MSRP is $16,860

It's not a tough decision

I just need to make sure I get a new car before school starts in August.

I bet these things will FLY off the lot at that price. There's no haggling, so walk in, pay MSRP and leave.

I think the same. I bet the dealerships will have a hard time getting these. WHen i bought my Camry, i asked about the Prius and every dealer just smirked and said they cant keep them on the lot. They all had truck due in a month and every single Prius on the truck were already taken.

It's worth noting, though, that the Civic's price is negotiable and you would certainly pay less than MSRP, while the Scion's is non-negotiable. Of course, you'd have to get some serious discounts on the Civic to come near the value of the tC IMO.

MAME:

Civic EX 1.7L obviously would beat the tC's 2.4L handdowns in gas mileage. but I will see you on the tracks
you can't have 160hp AND 160 torque AND 30 above MPG all together. you would be asking for too much.

0-60 in 7 seconds seems like a number IGN pulled out of their asses. It's pretty clear from all the reviews that no one had a chance to do any instrumented testing.

And that seems pretty damn optimistic considering the power/weight ratio given the specs we've seen.

Combined or constantly over 30mpg?

I think the new Max finally got independent rear sus. I think the Camry had it until at least 2001 tho. Not sure about the current design.

You'll get 30+ on the highway but not around town.

That was my point I made either in this or a different tC thread. It weighs almost 200lbs less than my 04 Accord, which is rated at 24/34, yet consistently gets anywhere from 25-27 in the city, and my accord has the same size engine and is rated the same power wise.
