For those that got the 600m, is the $50 worth the upgrade from XGA to SXGA? and what about $50 from 1.3 to 1.4? TIA!

I have a Sharp Actius MV12W
Intel PIIIm 1.13Ghz
512MB ram
48 MB Intel Extreme graphics with shared memory
12.1" screen

I have played BF1942, Warcraft 3, and the new John Madden demo. All of them ran fine on my so-so graphics card but the screen was a tad small

If you plan on playing alot of games, I'd go with the XGA since SXGA is sorta non standard in most games and you'd be forced to run at a non native resolution and it'll be blurry

Can the "Intel 855GM UMA Integrated Graphics with Dynamic Video Memory Technology"
play Warcraft III comfortably? How much memory can I allocate?

Thanks.

I play morrowind on my laptop, fps range from 35 (outdoor w/ lots of stuff) to 100+ (indoors, capped it at 60 though, seems smoother). It runs pretty smooth. I had the crash to desktop problem until I followed a few guides for tweaks. Now it stalls for a sec when loading areas, but I don't crash anymore. This is all running at native XGA (1024x768)

Neverwinter Nights also runs fine, although fps is a bit harder to watch (dunno setting to constantly show fps)

toshiba s505-s701

1.8 p4m
512 megs ram
geforce 440 go (mx)
15in uxga

i overclocked video card though ; P

and install latest drivers...

get around 100fps in quake3 (average) highest settings 1600x1200

played ut2k3 in 1024x768 fine

had to tone down the settings for empire earth to like 800x600

this is on a 1yr old laptop, not bad : P

I'm sure gaming is very attainable with the 2.4-2.6 p4m's and upper class radeon gf's coming out/out : P

I've been doing some research into laptops, thought I might want to try one out for college and I'm even thinking of going ahead and getting one that can spit out some pretty serious gaming so I can go ahead and leave my big rig behind. Now I compete so choppy performance or just enough juice to play 5 year old games without a hitch really isn't too appealing so my search hasn't gone too very well so far. Idealy I'd like to see some Centrino action with a mobile 5600 or 9600 soon but that doesn't look too very promising just yet. Although a high end p4 laptop system seemed a bit absurd to me at first until I realized that the price for such a high end gaming laptop didn't have to be so bad, chances are you can dish out $2000 and get a laptop that can run with the fastest desktops albeit the video still holds these puppies back from competing with the highest end gaming rigs.

http://pctorque.com/pre-notebook.php

http://www.eurocom.com/

Both offer 9600 powered beasts, not too shabby and you're probably looking at 3000 in 3Dmark2k3 VooDoo makes some high end gaming laptops with the 9600 but it seems we start to pay a hefty premium for a "cool" name and look, about an extra $1000...

Anyone know if we may by chance get to see some Centrinos that could bring some heat (ie 5600/9600) in the near future?

Bottom line.....

If you're a gamer, get a Dell D800/M60/8500 or the (pre-production) Alienware Area 51m w/ 5600go that allows you to upgrade the graphics module. Why spend a small fortune on something you can't upgrade down the road?

I just purchased a D800 w/ 1.6GHz, 1024MB, 40GB 5400, DVD/CDRW, WUXGA, 64MB 4200go, etc. and look forward to its arrival.

WOW... I too am shocked to find such a forum. I wish I had this some time ago. Maybe this will help some of you guys.

http://groups.msn.com/BobbyJosh/mycomputer1.msnw

This is my personal 'groups' page on msn. You can find pics and statistics about my lap top. It has the Mobility 9000 with 64MB RAM. Also I have installed Catalyst 3.6. Helps big time! I have played some of the following games on it:

Spinter Cell (Plays at 1280x1024 pretty well)
Enter The Matrix (plays at 1024x768 pretty nicely... can be played 1280x1024 but I prefer the extra eye candy over higher res)
Unreal Tournament (a joke for my laptop)
Unreal Tournament 2003 (1280x1024)
Unreal II The Awakening (1024x768 with mid ranged settings)
Diablo II (another joke)
Morrowind (1024x768... had some problems with original drivers graphically [it would pause graphically but sound would continue and then about a second later the graphics would kick back in and I'd be about 4 or 5 steps ahead depending on if I kept walking) but after I installed Catalyst 3.6... it worked pretty well)

Here is a good site for the best laptop rig I think you can find right now... I got this laptop to cost 3500 bucks easily. But man... would I love to have one.

Price is too much, you can find laptops that are basically identical to that for cheaper, I'd just really like to see the mobile 9600 available very very soon.

i'm pretty much with bunnyfubbles. been looking for a laptop, can't find one i like.

sager, eurocom, and prostar all apear to offer laptops from the same OEM. on the outside at least, they are all almost identical. that said, i played with eurocom's current 17" in the store and thought it was very nice. and big.

eurocom has a "future models" page, in which they list a 17" with a 128 MB radeon 9600 available october 9th. probably won't even be all that expensive, given their current pricing. maybe 1,600~1,700 tops. and it'll likely be available from sager and prostar as well.

so that's great if you are into those big suckers. myself, i can't understand why i can find all of these wonderful, compact, drool-worthy sub 4 lb. notebooks that have everything i could possibly want, except a decent GPU.

given that you are buying a complete system that is essentially un-upgradeable, and that even the best mobile GPU's are middle-of-the-road, this seems the one instance where buying top of the line is the way to go, price/performance wise (GPU only - you don't need a laptop with a 3 GHz proc. it makes me all the more angry that i could actually get a uselessly fast processor if i wanted to).

at 5.5 lbs, that crazy expensive thing from voodoopc is the lightest laptop i've seen with a rad 9600/geforce 5600. and even it only has 64 megs video memory. does anyone know if they buy from an OEM? and, if so, is there anyone else that sells the same thing? a little cheaper maybe?

Yeah, I don't know, I just want some more mobile 5600/9600 options to come along fairly soon and I'd love to get a Centrino based laptop that come packing one of those newer gpus. I like how Centrinos are less of a drain on the battery, while gaming may suck a lot of life I'd still like to have a long battery life when I'm not gaming and you'd think that Centrinos have more of a life than p4s (as the 3.2GHz p4 may be the last...) which makes me think it'd be wiser to invest in a Centrino laptop with hope that I could possibly upgrade the cpu with time. But then again I only rencently started researching laptop hardware so I'm still somewhat of a noob with the hardware in this area.

toshiba 5705-S705 with stock hard drive replaced by hitachi 7200rpm drive.

this plays every game my home rig plays, which makes it fun when I gotta 'work' late.

IBM Thinkpad T40 2373-72U
Processor: 1.5GHz Pentium-M
Video processor: 32MB ATI Radeon 7500
System memory: 256MB

Games played:
Diablo 2
UT2K3

Both play flawlessly when played with a mouse instead of trackpoint which had bugs in UT2K3.

I would say Sager makes really good gaming laptops.

They make Alienware laptops as well.
