SiS, no way IMO:
VIA is fine with me these days, they've done well with both the Apollo Pro 133A and the KT133(though both suffer from low PCI performance, but they're stable enough for my taste), but SiS, they've got to prove themselves first.

The crush from nVidia though, that might very well be what the Duron needs, NIC, soundcard, pretty decent vid card, all in one chipset.
And nVidia should know how to get the AGP implementation right.

This motherboard isn't meant for us Let those low-balling OEM's buy them and stick them in their low-end systems...

Hmm, I realize that SIS isn't the most highly regarded mobo manufacturer in the business, but for low end systems, I've used them a bunch in the past. I have run into idiosyncrasies (sp?) but they haven't been insurmountable. A LOT of SS7 systems were built using those boards, and a lot of them are still around. Definitely not for OC'ing, but a good cheap way to get into a system.

Let's not categorize and give SIS a chance the way we did for VIA. Besides, the board isn't for us, it's for our family members or friends who'll never peek into their pc. More like an AOL machine

SiS makes good chipsets for the market they target.

I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole...but when me and my roommate (cousin) put together a system for my uncle we used a SiS socket7 board (we had a spare K6-2/350) and the system works great.

He's not about to play quake3 on it, but for what he needs it's great.

For the OEM low-range market this kind of chipset is what they want. They can tout the high clock speed of the Duron (compared to the celly) and claim that the Duron busts the celeron's balls for performance and then pair it up with a crappy integrated chipset and sell them to tons of people.

There is a market for the Durons with the tweakers, because we all want to run our 600s at 950 and we damn sure don't want an integrated chipset so we don't care that the only duron chipset is the KT133

But the celeron way outsells Durons in pre-builts becuase it's for low cost market and there is no low cost duron board, now AMD can start getting the Duron into low cost systems, and that's where they really make the money on the Durons. The tweakers just aren't a large market share.

And it includes an AGP4x slot support so you can have an upgrade path.

I think this is a great solution for the value buyer. To give the SIS730 a fair shake you have to compare it to an Integrated solution using a Celery. Sure the 3D video is not great but 2D is pretty respectable. What about the ability to OC the FSB to 124??. Not many K133 chipsets can do that ??

Great news,I would not buy one myself but the Duron NEEDS this platform to compete (pricewise)with the celeron.

It's sure to cost a lot more than the SiS as well...this is nVidia we're talking about here

IBM trusted SiS enough for their Aptiva 200 series for years. They weren't huge GAME performers because of their K6-2 processors and imbedded video, but they worked dandy for spreadsheets & internet.
I hear SiS has a pretty decent 3D accelerator out now, too...

SiS now? ,well I`m not sure about that but back in the old 486 days there boards were quite popular(I had one) & it never gave me any problems.

Umm...I think the Duron has been destroying the Celeron for a while now.

uhmm... Not in lowend PC sales it's not. That's what this thread is all about... having the better priced PC in the low end market. Duron PC's are still over a thousand, simply because they haven't had an integraded system. This will allow OEMs to sell Duron computers at prices competitive with Celery's.

Remember, the lowend user only see's two things... Mhz, and $$$ That's one reason Intel doesn't care about the 66mhz bus.

SiS may become very popular on low-end computer market cause of SiS730. I'm pretty sure that it will be better chipset than i810, what (IMHO) fully sucks.

i810 would be about 10x better if it allowed an external AGP device...give the user some upgrade path..

SiS has a chipset similar to 730 for intel, I think it's called 630 but don't quote me on that number...

Plus SiS being fully integrated into a single chip rather than the standard two is probably even cheaper than i810.
