well, after ghosting a hard drive, and screwing up my Maxtor 20 gig, I managed to straighten out the hd problems( kept getting a "hd is an unknown format" error- instead of trying to format as 1 large partition, I tried 2 partitions, and it worked- let me go back in and re-partition again!), and said ' I will not let this board defeat me". Took the Maxtor, which was running on my be6/2, went into the registry, deleted the contents of the "Enum" file( keeps all of the drivers, and devices recognition info), and installed the Asus board( hey, since it's the 3rd time, got it down to about 15 minutes )fired her up, and voila' Asus at 876. Now, I just gotta do some tweakin' over the next few days. I feel allot better having the pci bus down below 100

Hey! I am thinking of buying this HD (Maxtor 20 gig 7200) for my system, which is also a P3V4X mobo. Anything I need to know? I already have to HD's on it now. Any help would be apprecieted.

not really: just be careful with the Max Blast software they give you with the drive- it works really well, just take your time if you will be copying the contents of one of your old drives over to it, as it's easy to screw things up( ask me!). I found it to be a reliable drive on my Abit be6/2 for the last 6 months or so, and handled the high pci bus mhz pretty well. Real nice and quiet, as well.

Thank's for replying. I just found it at Buy.com for $144.95 in stock. Is it really faster than most 54rmp's? Also do you advise using the Max software over say... Norton Ghost? I have been watching your threads to see how you came out with your problems. Glad to see everything is Kosher now! Let's Party now!

speed wise, all depends on how you use it. Besides playing U.T., I use Photoshop for some large TIFF files that I capture with my digital camera . I definitely noticed a reduction in time whenever I either saved or stored those files.
$149.95 seems to be the going rate for that drive( that's the regular Comp USA price)- back in the good ole' Staples coupon days, I received it for $115 shipped to my door
I have never used Ghost, so I can't speak from personal experience. The problems that I had with the Max Blast software was definitely self- induced. It actually works well, as it does the format and copy for you.

How large a hdd will a recent bios recognize?
Are bios overlays still needed? Thanks

hey, this forum took me from a guy who bought a system from a local dealer last July, because I didn't have a clue, to an overclockin' fool, who can swap out a board, now, and actually feel like I know what I'm doin' I'm not a pc tech by any sense of the word, but I work with automotive electronics, and when something doesn't work right, or well, I like to figure out why. This board has some increadibly knowledgeable people here, and if you take the time to try to find answers on your own,( found through the magic of scrolling ) they will help you when you hit a wall

I have a maxtor 8.4gig, after a year of use
It made really loud noises, sounded like it was scratching the diskplate and all of a suddent it went dead.
Lost about 6gig worth of stuff, horrible.
Only a few month ago.
All my mp3 files that I took to download for a year. :0

Dont know if should ever buy another maxtor product, they have a higher failure rate then WD so maybe I go WD

Same with me Resin! I only took this up as a hobby after working in a computer shop with a guy I hunt with! Go Figure! Now it is all I want to do. I build 2 or 3 systems a week. When I get off my regular job I go up to his shop and spend all afternoon. Thats the easy part. Coming to this forum and trying to help with other problems is a real challenge not to metion a great learning experience. I still have a lot to learn!

I've dealt with 2 maxtor 10GB HD's. The Maxtor partition & format program did not work with either. Had to use the old standby fdisk' and 'format'. I've done 2 western Digital drives also; I'll pay the extra $15 for the WD's any day of the week.

I agree, the IBM 75GXP is very nice and fast. I have had Maxtor's, WD's and now all I want is another 75GXP. By the way, the IBM drive is to my knowledge the only hard drive that the disk surface is made of glass, and not aluminum.

since my original post, that is what I have done I added a "small" 15 gig'er, and am quite happy with it. Quiet as all hell and fast!
