I know it's not without its issues and critics, but people that follow the principles get results. As you pointed out those same people yo-yo dieted at best before adopting the strategy. Anecdotal evidence carries more weight (I'm a punny guy) when there is so much of it.
Add me to the list of anecdotes, the most weight I've ever lost in the fastest period was on keto, I was eating probably 2500cal/day and dropping weight like I had an eating disorder. Something like 10lb/month for 6 months.

I have never spoken with anyone that has done it who hasn't had a similar experience. Invariably, part of the testimony is never being hungry while doing it. As opposed to the calorie in < calorie out mantra where people cite hunger/being miserable as the reason they gave up.

The eat less than you burn mantra is simple answers for simple minds. The complexities of any issue that make simple solutions often among the most difficult to implement are lost on these folks.

Yup. Lack of hunger was a big selling point to me too. I will point out that for some people it can get a bit droll (if you're doing it right, it's a LOT of meat and veg, and that's about it). If you can handle that though it's liable to get you very healthy very quickly.

The only way that's possibly droll is if every night is the meat and 2 veg.

It speaks to a broader issue, which is that so few enjoy or are skilled at cooking. I can turn a proteins and veggies into a month menu and never eat the same thing twice.

For myself, just cutting processed foods does it nicely. I eat a steady diet of brown rice, black beans, chicken / egg whites, fruit and vegetables. Cutting junk like pizza and chips, and or anything with added sugars and your body will thank u. I also have high cholesterol genetically to contend with :/

I also weight almost everything to make sure I’m getting enough and not too much

Actually not true. Talk to someone who's spent a lifetime fighting with weight, about 6 months after starting keto, and let them tell you how much a calorie is worth.
I've never seen a weight loss discussion or diet that doesn't include limiting calories. If there is a way to lose weight while overeating I'd like to know about it.

I mean, he just said he was eating 2500calories a day and still lost 10lbs/month. Since our standard diets are based on 2k calories, he was technically “overeating”

My sports med doc calls fiber the closest thing to an anti calorie you can eat. I eat whole pasture raised eggs, including local, I ain't missing out on the nutrition in the yolk. And at an average of 70 calories each I eat a bunch of them.

I was also 'consuming' a lot more calories than I was 'burning'. My life was quite sedentary at that point (IT worker, wasn't working out at the time) If you're properly in ketosis you do *not* follow a calorie in < calorie out formula, the body doesn't work that way in that state.

To be clear, this is not the only weirdie corner-case where 'duh just eat less' isn't applicable, it's one example. There's many, many cases where just doing more and eating less will not necessarily result in weight lost, period. I mean, consider all the people out there that eat like fucking pigs and never seem to gain weight. If it was as simple as calories in vs out, why aren't they all fat as shit?

For the cholesterol specifically, try to wedge in more anti-inflammatories, and don't worry so much about dietary cholesterol (there's zero correlation between dietary cholesterol and cholesterol content of blood). You've got the right idea with the sugars, pull out some more carbs as well and you'll cut down the body's inflammatory response.

Weigh too much? Eat less.

Depressed? Stop being so sad.

Lethargic? Go outside more.

These are all over-simplified answers without understanding of the underlying causes.
Good stuff!

Can't pay your bills? Stop being poor.

It hurts when you lift your arm? Stop doing that.

You're an alcoholic? Stop drinking.

It's why sloganeering like MAGA is so effective. Provide simple solutions to complex problems even if the probability they will successfully resolve the problem is rather low.

Two things I've changed in the last two years. 1. Resistance training of some kind. I used to be all about cardio, walking, hiking, etc...but my LDL was still high. Added in resistance training and LDL went down. 2. Quit drinking coffee, March 1st, 2023. My last two blood workups total cholesterol has been under 200, which is about half of what it used to be and the least it's been ever. Cutting phase coming soon , those extra junk carbs will have a wait for a few months.

Yea man, fiber is pretty good for ya! IIRC, there's a breaking point. While I tracked my food for a while, I don't much now. I know I get way more fiber than the average person, but not enough to be a problem

I allow myself 1 yolk per day most of the time. I actually try to do it more often the closer I get to the blood check . I know I said egg whites above, but I didn't wanna explain lol....lazy fingers busy mind

My HDL was a sliver low (like 2% below the lower limit), and my LDL has always been optimal. My doc wanted to put me on a statin. I told them no, and they tried to badger me into it. I promptly changed doctors. That's what I mean about throwing pills at a problem. Start a statin, you never get off of it. I'm not doing that just because my "good" cholesterol is a hair low.

Doctor's like that are lazy and want the quickest, easiest, hands-off fix, IMO.

I’ve never heard of that recommended for low HDL before, yikes. Iirc, low HDL is like eat more fish.

My doc is pretty cool rn, he’s older and was pretty chill about easing me onto a statin. I tried one before (Lipitor) and it was horrrible. The doc at that time basically didn’t listen to my complaints and I just dropped it.

Obesity is FAR more complicated than that
Once one is able to crack that egg, even just a little bit, it feels pretty damn empowering!
Some things are pretty easy to change (switch from beer to whisky and from pop to water). Some things take a lot more discipline and/or money (cook meals from scratch using fresh produce rather than eating frozen or boxed shit.)

I still mostly blame the ole food pyramid that we had in school in the 80s telling us we are supposed to eat like 11 servings of carbs per day.

Thanks man, coffee is still so hard some days. I love coffee lol.

And we’ll done to you as well, keto ain’t ez
No shit, it feels good on it but it's a haul if you have cravings or if you're working it with a partner that does. I swear pasta was invented by Satan.

That did kick off our cooking revolution now, and I'm better for it, even off keto I've improved my health through better meal prep, care for ingredients, and cooking multinationally.

Coffee increases inflammation, which encourages cholesterol plaque buildup in arteries. Note that cholesterol is naturally occurring in our bloodstream and isn't a problem; its the cholesterol sticking to arteries that's an issue.
The best kind tastes like bad cholesterol 😂
