HI
Working on old, old Toshiba laptop for my daughter and grand kids.
The unit is so slow. Mostly due to never being turned on to update. (last windows update was over a year ago) Unit will be used to write school reports for middle school, etc.
The unit is a celeron cpu with 2 gig ram.
I ordered a new restore disk from Toshiba and will take the unit back to day one!
The unit is and will be running win 7,,, 64 bit.
I want to add another 2 to 4 gig of ram. Problem is finding ddr 2 ram.
I've looked for exact matches and can't seem to find any,

The Toshiba part number for the 2 gig ram is pa3669u-1m2g. Toshiba 2 gb ddr2 800 memory module
The Toshiba part number for the 4 gig ram is pa3670u-1m4g. Toshiba 2 gb ddr2 800 memory module

The id numbers on the chip installed in the laptop is m471b5673 fh0-cf8.

What is confusing me is some of the upgrade ram I found is ddr-3 running at a higher rate.
I'd like to get a exact match.
Or,,, is ddr3 downward compatible to ddr2, etc?? Also, not sure if voltages are the same for ddr2 and ddr3.
I've spent hours and hours looking up parts and,,,,,, am completely confused!!!
Any help,,, all help is needed
Thanks

DDR2 and DDR3 are NOT the same, are NOT compatible (although some desktop mobos for AMD AM2+/AM3 and Intel Core2 S775 may have had both types of slots on them, but you could only use one of the other), and are generally NOT the same voltage.

If you want guaranteed-compatible memory, go to crucial.com, and use their memory selector thingy.

Instead of looking for outdated hardware to buy, install a 32 bit version of Windows and see how much faster it will get.

The physical slot and voltage are totally different between the two. Although more ram is never a bad idea I think if you're set with sticking with this laptop for a while longer, a SSD drive will help speed things up and make it a little more pleasant to use. Of course just make sure the laptop is using a SATA drive and not IDE. If you can give us the model number of the laptop I can check for you.

Dont waste time on RAM.

The biggest performance jumps (as people have already stated) will be to go to 32 bit Windows (which you should be able to download from the notebook manufacturer or PCRiver) and add an SSD.

If you want to buy some old DDR2 then go to Crucial's website, key in your laptop model number. Once you get the physical parameters (including the voltage) for compatible memory, then go to the resale section of your local eWaste center. They have bins of memory modules. You'll find your stuff & it will be dirt (& I mean dirt) cheap.

Been there, done that.

HI
Problem solved. Thanks for the info on using the 32 bit o/s. Sadly,,, I ordered the 64 bit o/s and it should be here by next Monday.
As for the ram,,,,, !@#$ All the specs I got from Toshiba said ddr2 ram.
I ran the Crucial ram finder and it came up with ddr3. Did a chat with a Crucial rep and he said the ram installed is the ram installed with this number. m471b5673 fh0-cf8.
I ordered the 4 gig package and will install it when it gets here then install the win 64 bit o/s.
Guess I should have checked here sooner and ordered later.
Thanks

Just gone through PCRiver site. Looks good but one question - Does all the downloadable ISO of MS Windows provided there are original untouched ISO's by Microsoft?
