I've seen a number of sites that charge to do searches. In many states, you can do your own search. For example, here, in California, I have found money for several members of my family and a number of friends at the California Bureau of Unclaimed Property. To find the official office in your state, use a good search engine, such as Google, and enter "unclaimed property" (in quotes) and the name of your state.

Companies like these usually take a cut of the 'found money' when it's over a certain amount. Oprah did a show on either this site or another.
Like an earlier poster mentioned, check with your state's unclaimed website where you can get the same info for free.

I was in there, being owed over $200 dollars from a Fire Insurance Company, but I have never lost any property to fire... Could it be a differrent person with my same name in my same city? I assume this is the case, but if I try to claim the money just in case, do you think it would come through?

This is kind of a joke. My name is spelled so differently that if I do a google search for my name only 1 thing comes up but this site comes up with 22. It lists anything that is even remotely close to my name so I'm guessing there is a lot of dreamers with common names that see their name and think its them. Don't get to excited.

They make you send proof of identity and your social security number.. it will probably be matched to the one on file. If it doesn't match they won't send you the claim.

Was surprised to find both me and my ex-wife have something coming, her from an auto insurance co. and me from life insurance. Positive it is us since I recognize the street address where she lived 20 odd years ago when we divorced.

[and if it turns out to be $50K, you can count on a case of your favorite bubbly! (don't hold your breath; the policy wasn't THAT big! )]
