Find the Problem

I'm trying to fix my sister-in-law's HP computer.

I noticed when I start up her system, the CPU fan doesn't spin. So I know it's an overheating problem. I tested her fan on my computer and it spins just fine.

::My thoughts::

It's most likely the power supply, cause the fans inside seem to be spinning slow.

or

Maybe it's the mobo...because her computer will start up all the way to windows. However, after 10 mins of running if you restart, it won't get anywhere.

What do you guys think? Should I get a new power supply?

Where does the fan get its power from? A header on the mbo or from a standard connector that is used for drives and stuff? If its from a header on the mobo, then its the mobo that will need replacing.

You may also want to check if the ball bearings on thefan are worn out, which causes it to stop spinning at certain angles.

Yeah it's a header on the mobo...so you think the connector is fried? If it's a bad mobo...would it still be able to boot up all the way to windows?

I've had a bad mobo before and it wouldn't even get me to POST.

You can power a 3-pin fan directly from the power supply using a 3-pin-to-4-pin converter, if you like. SVC.com typically has them for about $1.
