Finder, THE biggest thing I hate about OSX

No kidding. A Finder replacement isn't worth $40 for me.

I hate folders and sub folders...and sub folders within sub folders. I also hate yellow folders, why MS always uses the same ugly yellow business like folders.
I just like shortcuts, nice large shortcuts to everything I would want..yup, that's what I like. However Windows search is pathetic in use and performance compared to a small portable app called Everything.

I'm not sure if this is true for everyone, but I have been running the trial version of PathFinder for two years now and it has never stopped working. Every so often I get a message that the trial is over but it still keeps working just fine. I am still (or back rather) on Snow Leopard so results may vary.

I'm also not a fan of Finder, Explorer isn't perfect either but it's much more useable by default. For example accessing a random network share via Finder makes you go through the stupid connect to server dialog vs just typing \\somename in the address bar like explorer. That's probably not a big deal for home users but when you are trying to use OS X in a business environment it's incredibly frustrating.

The Finder alternatives I have tried also seem to be lacking compared to some of the Explorer replacements out there, particularly Q-Dir which is my current choice on windows.

I haven't had many issues with finder. I'm curious to see how the tagging system helps organize things with Mavericks.

Just use the shortcut Apple-K. I do it like 10 times a day, and its like second nature. Or if you are in Safari, you can do file URLs just like in Explorer. file://<path> will open a Finder window at that location. <protocol>://<address> is the same as doing's Finder's Apple-K, so it will open the network location. Or, you can simply add a connect to server (Apple-K) button to the Finder's toolbar. Made a quick video (excuse the quality, I didnt want to spend too much time on this):

You can even use "open" from Terminal to open the connect to server dialog:

Anyways, I'm constantly switching between machines and connecting to servers, and it never bothered me. Explorer actually bothers me more in this regard, because I would rather specify a username and password. I set up a NAS with guest read privileges for some things, and writes requires an actual account. If you just do \\<server> in Explorer, it will authenticate as a guest automatically. So I always end up using the Map Network Drive dialog, which is essentially the same thing.

But whatever, different strokes for different folks. When I started using a Mac I know I complained about the Finder, basically because it wasn't Explorer. Now its the other way around, cause I only use my PC for games. :biggrin:

You can add http://www.netwares.com to the list of cheap refill sites. Pretty good service. You can save a lot of money going the refill route, especially if you do quite a bit of color photo printing.

You can sort by "kind" and folders will be first. Not to thread jack, but the most annoying thing from OSX is working between Journaled and NTFS. Everything else is pretty good and Mavericks should improve finder.
